Description

Pauillac de Latour 2020 in demi-bottle format offers a rare opportunity to experience the unmistakable Latour style in a more accessible and earlier-drinking expression. As the esteemed third wine of the legendary Pauillac First Growth, it combines pedigree, precision and drinkability in a compact 37.5 cl format—ideal for weeknight indulgence or intimate dinners. Praised with 92/100 by Vinøs and admired by critic Neal Martin, this cuvée captures the gravitas of Pauillac with a touch of youthful charm.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Pauillac de Latour 2020 shows a deep, vibrant ruby-purple hue, signaling concentration and classic Left Bank structure. The nose opens with layered aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry and juicy blueberry, underscored by notes of graphite, crushed stone and a subtle hint of melted road tar, echoing the hallmark mineral tension of Latour’s Pauillac terroir. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied yet tightly knit, with a core of ripe blackberry and dark plum supported by fresh acidity and finely grained, firm tannins. Flavors of cassis, blueberry and a touch of black cherry intertwine with savory cedar, pencil shavings and a faint smoky note. The finish is long, slightly strict at this youthful stage, and clearly built on classical Bordeaux structure rather than opulence. While approachable after a brief aeration, this 2020 will reward 5–10 years of cellaring, and in demi-bottle format it will mature a touch faster than the standard 75 cl.

Production
Sourced from the vineyards of Château Latour in Pauillac, on the Left Bank of Bordeaux, Pauillac de Latour benefits from the estate’s exceptional gravel soils over clay and limestone subsoils, which provide superb drainage and naturally low yields. The terroir—exposed to the Gironde estuary’s moderating influence—ensures optimal ripening of the predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon-based blend, with Merlot and smaller portions of other Bordeaux varieties contributing roundness and aromatic complexity. Grapes are carefully selected and harvested by hand, then vinified in temperature-controlled vats with meticulous plot-by-plot handling. Aging takes place in high-quality French oak barrels (with a more modest proportion of new oak than the grand vin), allowing structure, finesse and terroir expression to integrate harmoniously without overwhelming the fruit.

Food & Serving
Pauillac de Latour 2020 is a natural partner for classic French and modern bistro cuisine alike—think roast lamb with rosemary, entrecôte with béarnaise, duck breast, game birds, or a well-marbled ribeye grilled over charcoal. It also performs beautifully alongside dishes featuring mushrooms, truffle, or earthy root vegetables, and pairs elegantly with aged hard cheeses such as Comté or Manchego. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression. In demi-bottle, the wine opens fairly quickly; a 30-minute decant is sufficient in its youth to soften the tannins and bring out the layered dark fruit and graphite notes.

Producer
Château Latour stands as one of Bordeaux’s most revered First Growths, officially classified in 1855 and renowned for producing some of the world’s most long-lived and profound Cabernet Sauvignon–based wines. Situated at the southern end of Pauillac, close to the Gironde estuary, Latour’s vineyards occupy some of the finest deep gravel terroirs in the Médoc, crowned by the famous Enclos parcel surrounding the château. Over centuries, the estate has built a reputation for unwavering quality, rigorous selection and an almost obsessive focus on vineyard health and precision in the cellar. Pauillac de Latour, as the château’s troisième vin, offers a refined and more approachable window into this storied property’s style, bringing the authority and character of Latour to the glass in a form that can be enjoyed earlier and more frequently.
