Description

Franchetti Terre Siciliane 2021 is a bold, singular red born on the dramatic slopes of Mount Etna, crafted by the visionary estate Passopisciaro (Vini Franchetti). This rare blend of Petit Verdot and Cesanese d’Affile is grown high in Contrada Guardiola at 820 meters above sea level, where intense sun meets volcanic ash and cool mountain air. The result is a powerful yet finely sculpted wine that captures both the muscle of Bordeaux varieties and the aromatic lift typical of Etna.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Franchetti 2021 shows a deep, opaque ruby to purple hue, hinting at its concentration and structure. The nose is layered and expressive, offering ripe dark fruits—blackcurrant, blackberry and plum—intertwined with notes of violet, lavender, graphite, wild herbs and a subtle smokiness that nods to its volcanic origin, alongside refined touches of sweet spice and cedar from barrel aging. On the palate, this is a full-bodied, richly textured wine with impressive depth. Dense black fruit is framed by firm, polished tannins and a vibrant, high-altitude freshness that keeps the wine from ever feeling heavy. Flavors of black cherry, blueberry, dark chocolate, licorice and exotic spice unfold with air, leading into a long, structured finish marked by mineral tension and fine acidity. While already compelling in its youth, the 2021 has clear aging potential: it should evolve beautifully over 10–15 years, developing more savory, truffle and tobacco nuances with time in bottle.

Production
The grapes for Franchetti 2021 come from Contrada Guardiola on Etna’s northern slopes, a steep, terraced site with ancient lava flows and volcanic ash soils that are poor, rocky and extremely well-drained. At 820 meters above sea level, the vines benefit from strong diurnal temperature swings, preserving acidity and aromatic detail in this otherwise powerful blend. Yields are kept low, and harvesting is typically done by hand, parcel by parcel, to ensure only perfectly ripe clusters of Petit Verdot and Cesanese d’Affile are selected. In the cellar, the varieties are vinified with great care to manage their natural power—typically with a long maceration to extract color and structure, followed by maturation in quality oak barrels that lend polish and complexity without overwhelming the volcanic character. The result is a structured, ageworthy wine that marries the intensity of international varieties with the precision of Etna’s terroir.

Food & Serving
Franchetti Terre Siciliane 2021 is a natural match for rich, flavorful dishes such as dry-aged ribeye, slow-braised beef cheeks, lamb shank, venison, wild boar ragù or deeply flavored stews. It also pairs beautifully with truffle dishes, mushroom-based pastas, aged hard cheeses (such as Pecorino, Parmigiano Reggiano) and dark, herb-crusted roasts. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both its fruit and its spice-driven complexity. Decanting is strongly recommended—at least 1–2 hours before serving in its youth—to allow the tannins to soften and the wine’s layered aromatics and mineral backbone to fully emerge.

Producer
Passopisciaro, founded by the late Andrea Franchetti, is one of the pioneering estates that helped reestablish Mount Etna as one of Italy’s most exciting fine-wine regions. Working high on Etna’s northern slopes, Franchetti recognized early the potential of the volcano’s dramatic terraces and ancient lava soils to produce wines of great character and longevity. While the estate is best known for its Nerello Mascalese-based Etna reds, the Franchetti cuvée stands apart as an intensely personal project—an unapologetically powerful interpretation of Etna through Petit Verdot and Cesanese d’Affile. Over the years, Passopisciaro has earned international acclaim for its single-contrada bottlings, its role in defining Etna’s modern identity, and its consistent ability to deliver wines that are both distinctive and deeply tied to their volcanic origin.
