Orin Swift Cellars, Abstract MG, 2021

Orin Swift Cellars Abstract MG 2021 is a bold, California red that captures Dave Phinney’s signature collage-style approach to winemaking: layered, expressive, and built from a wide range of vineyard sites. Primarily Grenache, with Syrah and Petite Sirah in support, it brings together fruit from across California to create a wine with both energy and depth.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Abstract typically shows a deep, dark ruby core with plenty of concentration. The nose is generous and complex, with ripe dark berries, black cherry, plum, spice, and floral notes, alongside hints of cocoa, licorice, and toasted oak. The palate is plush and full-bodied, with juicy fruit up front, ripe tannins, and a rounded texture that carries through to a long, richly flavored finish. The Grenache gives lift and freshness, while Syrah and Petite Sirah add color, structure, and power. It already offers plenty of immediate appeal, but the depth and oak integration suggest it can also develop nicely over the next several years.

Production
Abstract is assembled from approximately 100 individual parcels across California, selected for the different qualities they contribute to the final blend. Phinney’s approach is all about contrast and complexity, drawing from a mix of cooler and warmer sites to create a wine that balances elegance with intensity. After blending, the wine is aged for 8 months in French and American oak barrels, with 32% new oak, adding texture, spice, and subtle vanilla notes.

Food & Serving
This is a versatile red for rich, flavorful dishes such as grilled ribeye, braised short ribs, lamb chops, barbecue, or roasted mushroom pasta. It also works well with mature cheeses and dishes with smoky or spiced elements. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 30–60 minutes to help the wine open up and show its full aromatic range.
