Description

Oasi Degli Angeli Marche Kurni 2021 is a powerful, small-production red that has earned cult status among Italian wine lovers. Crafted on the Adriatic slopes of the Marche region, it showcases Montepulciano at its most intense and luxurious. With microscopic yields and meticulous care in the vineyard and cellar, Kurni delivers a concentration and silkiness that stand apart from most central Italian reds. This wine’s unique selling point is its combination of extreme ripeness, depth, and surprising finesse. Kurni helped put the tiny estate of Oasi degli Angeli on the international map in the late 1990s, changing perceptions of what Marche red wine could be. Each new vintage is highly anticipated and produced in limited quantities, making it a sought-after bottle for collectors and enthusiasts alike.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Kurni 2021 is nearly opaque, with a deep, inky ruby core and violet reflections that cling to the rim. The viscosity is evident, leaving slow, thick legs that hint at both richness and weight. The nose is intensely aromatic and layered: ripe black cherry, blackberry compote and plum interwoven with notes of sweet spice, vanilla, and cocoa from barrel aging. With air, more complex nuances emerge—dried fig, licorice, violet, tobacco leaf, and a subtle balsamic lift that keeps the wine from feeling heavy. On the palate, Kurni 2021 is full-bodied and enveloping, with a plush, almost velvety texture. The fruit profile is dark and opulent, dominated by blackberries, black cherries, and macerated berries, framed by fine, ripe tannins and well-integrated oak. Hints of dark chocolate, espresso, warm spice, and a touch of Mediterranean herbs add depth to the long, persistent finish. Despite its richness, a core of freshness and minerality provides balance and structure. While already seductive in its youth, Kurni 2021 has the stuffing to age gracefully. Expect optimal drinking from about 2025 onwards, with a plateau of maturity potentially lasting 10–15 years from the vintage, during which tertiary notes of leather, dried fruit, and forest floor will develop.

Production
Oasi degli Angeli is located in the southern part of the Marche region, near the coastal town of Cupra Marittima, where hillside vineyards look out over the Adriatic Sea. The terroir is characterized by poor, rocky soils with limestone and clay, low natural vigor, and strong maritime influences that moderate temperatures and encourage long, even ripening. This challenging environment, combined with extremely low yields per vine, naturally concentrates flavor and structure in the grapes. The estate works with meticulous, often manual vineyard practices—severe green harvesting, careful canopy management, and hand selection at harvest—to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes are used. Kurni is based primarily, if not entirely, on Montepulciano, harvested at full physiological ripeness to achieve its signature richness and intensity. In the cellar, fermentation is carried out with close temperature control to extract maximum color and flavor while preserving aromatics. The wine is then aged in small French oak barrels (barriques), a significant portion of which are new, adding texture, polish, and layers of spice. Bottling is typically done with minimal intervention to preserve the wine’s character and concentration.

Food & Serving
Kurni 2021 is best matched with richly flavored, protein-driven dishes that can stand up to its power and intensity. Think slow-braised beef short ribs, ossobuco, lamb shank, bistecca alla fiorentina, or game such as venison and wild boar. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses (Parmigiano Reggiano, pecorino), truffle dishes, and hearty pasta such as pappardelle with ragù. Serve at 16–18°C (60–65°F) to highlight both fruit and structure without emphasizing the alcohol. Given its youth and concentration, decanting is highly recommended: 1–2 hours in a wide-bottomed decanter will help the aromas open and the tannins soften. For more nuanced complexity, open the bottle a little earlier and revisit it over the course of an evening.

Producer
Oasi degli Angeli is a tiny, family-run estate in the Marche that has achieved an outsized reputation thanks to its uncompromising approach and the remarkable quality of Kurni. Founded and driven by a philosophy of extreme viticulture—very low yields, meticulous manual work, and a focus on maximum expression of site—the winery has challenged conventional expectations of what Montepulciano and Marche reds can be. In a region better known for its whites and more modest reds, Oasi degli Angeli has become a reference point for powerful, modern-style Italian wines with international acclaim. High scores from influential critics and a loyal following among enthusiasts have cemented Kurni’s status as one of Italy’s cult labels. Despite this success, production remains intentionally limited, allowing the estate to maintain its exacting standards and singular style.
