Description

Nicolas Joly Les Vieux Clos Savennières Bio 2019 is a powerful, characterful Chenin Blanc from one of the Loire Valley’s most visionary estates. Sourced from biodynamically farmed vineyards on the steep slopes of Savennières, it captures the intensity, texture and energy that have made Joly’s wines cult favorites among serious Chenin lovers. The 2019 vintage stands out for its unusual accessibility in youth while retaining the structure and complexity that reward patient cellaring.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Les Vieux Clos 2019 shows a deep lemon to light golden hue, already hinting at concentration and evolution. The nose is layered and expressive, with aromas of ripe quince, baked apple, and yellow plum alongside notes of acacia honey, chamomile tea, beeswax, lanolin, and a touch of almond and hazelnut. Subtle oxidative nuances and a flinty, smoky minerality add further complexity. On the palate, the wine is dry, full-bodied and firmly structured, with Joly’s hallmark combination of richness and vibrant acidity. Flavors of preserved lemon, pear, and stone fruits intermingle with honeycomb, spice, and a distinctly saline, schist-derived minerality. The texture is broad yet taut, almost tannic in its grip, leading into a very long, mouth-coating finish. While the 2019 is surprisingly approachable when first opened, it evolves significantly with extended aeration and has excellent aging potential of at least 10–15 years, likely longer under good cellaring conditions.

Production
Les Vieux Clos comes from biodynamically certified vineyards in Savennières, on the right bank of the Loire, where Chenin Blanc is rooted in poor, stony soils rich in schist, quartz, and volcanic rock. This demanding terroir naturally limits yields and contributes to the wine’s drive and minerality. Grapes are hand-harvested in multiple passes to ensure optimal ripeness and healthy fruit, often with a proportion of noble rot when nature allows. In the cellar, fermentation occurs with indigenous yeasts, typically in old oak barrels, with long, slow fermentations and extended lees contact. Joly intervenes minimally, using little to no fining or filtration and very low levels of sulfur, allowing the wine to fully express its site, vintage and biodynamic upbringing.

Food & Serving
This is a gastronomic white that shines alongside rich, flavorful dishes. It pairs beautifully with roast chicken or guinea fowl, veal in cream sauces, lobster, scallops, or monkfish, as well as mushroom-based dishes and truffle-inflected cuisine. Mature cheeses, especially aged goat’s cheese, Comté, or hard Alpine styles, are excellent companions, and the wine’s structure can also handle subtly spiced Asian dishes with depth and umami. Serve at 11–13°C (52–55°F) rather than too cold, to let the aromatics open up. Decanting is strongly recommended—several hours is ideal, and adventurous tasters may enjoy following the wine over 24 hours or more as it unfolds.

Producer
SAS Famille Joly, led for decades by Nicolas Joly and now increasingly by his daughter Virginie, is one of the world’s reference estates for biodynamic winegrowing. Based in Savennières in the Loire Valley, the family is best known for the legendary Coulée de Serrant monopole, but Les Vieux Clos plays an important role in showcasing the broader terroir of the appellation. Joly was among the earliest and most vocal advocates of biodynamics in fine wine and helped shape a global conversation about ecology, authenticity and terroir expression. Today the domaine is recognized as a benchmark for profound, long-lived Chenin Blanc and remains highly influential within the Loire and far beyond.
