Description
Nestore Bosco Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Pan 2017 is a rich, characterful red from one of Abruzzo’s most historic family estates. Crafted from Montepulciano grapes grown on hillside vineyards near the Adriatic, it offers a compelling balance of depth, texture, and drinkability. The “Pan” bottling stands out for its concentration and elegance, capturing both the rustic soul and modern finesse of Abruzzo’s flagship grape.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this 2017 Montepulciano d’Abruzzo shows a deep ruby core with garnet highlights at the rim, hinting at its evolution in bottle. The nose opens with ripe black cherry and plum, followed by notes of dried herbs, licorice, sweet spice, and a touch of leather and cocoa as it unfolds in the glass.
On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with a velvety texture and well-integrated tannins. Flavors of dark berries, black cherry compote, and blackberry are layered with savory hints of tobacco leaf, earthy underbrush, and a gentle vanilla-spice from oak aging. The acidity is fresh and supportive, giving energy to the fruit and leading to a long, satisfying finish with a subtle mineral edge. This vintage is drinking beautifully now but still has the structure to develop further complexity over the next 5–7 years.
Production
Nestore Bosco’s vineyards in Abruzzo benefit from a classic combination of maritime and mountain influences: sun-exposed hillside sites with calcareous and clay-rich soils, cooled by breezes from the Adriatic and the nearby Apennines. The Montepulciano grapes for the Pan cuvée are typically sourced from older vines, harvested by hand at optimal ripeness to ensure both concentration and balance. After careful selection, the grapes undergo a controlled fermentation to preserve varietal purity, followed by extended maceration to gently extract color and tannins. The wine is then matured in a combination of oak (often large traditional casks and/or barriques) and bottle, allowing the flavors to harmonize and the structure to soften before release.
Food & Serving
This Montepulciano d’Abruzzo pairs naturally with hearty, flavor-packed dishes: think slow-braised lamb shanks, beef ragù with pappardelle, grilled sausages, roast pork, or aged pecorino and other firm Italian cheeses. It also works beautifully with wood-fired pizzas topped with cured meats and mushrooms, or rich baked pasta dishes. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatics and texture. Decanting for 30–45 minutes before serving helps the wine open up and reveal its full aromatic complexity, especially in its current stage of maturity.
Producer
Nestore Bosco is one of Abruzzo’s historic wine families, with roots in the region dating back to the late 19th century. The Pan bottling reflects the estate’s ambition to showcase Montepulciano at a higher level of refinement and age-worthiness, while staying true to the rustic charm that defines the region.
