Description
Nervi Conterno Gattinara Valferana 2021 is a finely etched expression of Nebbiolo from one of Alto Piemonte’s most historic and now most sought‑after estates. Sourced from the revered Valferana vineyard, this is a wine that combines the precision and lift of Gattinara with the depth and structure you’d expect from a top Barolo producer. It’s a serious, age‑worthy red that showcases just how refined, mineral and complex Nebbiolo can be outside the Langhe.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Valferana shows a luminous, pale ruby garnet hue with characteristic Nebbiolo translucence and a delicate orange rim. The nose is finely detailed and high‑toned: wild strawberry, raspberry and red cherry interwoven with dried rose petals, violet, blood orange zest, and hints of sweet spice, anise, incense and crushed stone. Subtle notes of cedar, tobacco leaf and a faint iron‑like minerality speak clearly of Gattinara’s volcanic soils.
On the palate, the wine is taut and linear yet surprisingly mouth‑coating, with vibrant acidity and beautifully sculpted tannins that are firm but ultra‑fine. Flavors echo the nose—red berries, sour cherry, rose and citrus peel—layered with savory nuances of herbs, tea leaf, leather and flint. The finish is long, dry and saline‑mineral, promising excellent development in bottle. While already showing great purity and aromatic lift, this 2021 Valferana is built for the cellar and should evolve gracefully for 10–20 years, gaining complexity, texture and truffle‑tinged tertiary notes with time.
Production
Valferana is one of Gattinara’s most historic crus, a high‑altitude site rooted in ancient volcanic and porphyry‑rich soils that give the wine its hallmark minerality and tension. The cool Alpine influence and significant diurnal shifts preserve Nebbiolo’s acidity and aromatic finesse, while the south/south‑west exposures ensure optimal ripeness without excess weight. Grapes are typically harvested by hand, with strict selection in the vineyard to retain only perfectly healthy, ripe bunches. In the cellar, Nervi Conterno follows a traditional, minimalist approach: gentle crushing, extended maceration on the skins to extract fine tannins and aromatic depth, and fermentation in temperature‑controlled tanks using native yeasts when possible. Elevage generally takes place in large Slavonian or Austrian oak botti, which respect the delicacy of Nebbiolo while allowing slow oxygenation and integration, resulting in a wine that is both classic in style and precise in its expression of place.
Food & Serving
Nervi Conterno Gattinara Valferana 2021 is a superb companion to refined, savory dishes: mushroom risotto, vitello tonnato, grilled lamb chops, roasted game birds, truffle‑accented pasta, and mature hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano or aged Castelmagno. Its bright acidity and fine tannins also work beautifully with rich braises and slow‑cooked ragù. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) to highlight its perfume and elegance. Decanting for 1–2 hours in its youth helps the bouquet fully unfurl and softens the structure; with more bottle age, a shorter decant or gentle splash‑pour is sufficient.
Producer
Founded in 1906, Nervi is the oldest active winery in Gattinara and a historic benchmark for Nebbiolo from Alto Piemonte. In recent years it has gained renewed international attention under the stewardship of Roberto Conterno of Giacomo Conterno, one of Barolo’s most acclaimed producers. The estate’s renaming to Nervi Conterno signaled a new chapter, combining century‑old vineyards and traditions with obsessive attention to detail in the vineyard and cellar. Focusing on top crus such as Valferana and Molsino, Nervi Conterno has been instrumental in re‑establishing Gattinara as one of Italy’s great terroirs for Nebbiolo, with critics and collectors now seeking out these wines for their precision, age‑worthiness and distinctive volcanic minerality.
