Description
Negro Angelo e Figli Roero Riserva Sudisfà 2021 is a refined expression of Nebbiolo from the gently rolling hills of Roero in Piemonte, offering an alternative to the more muscular style of Barolo. Here, Nebbiolo shows its elegant, almost ‘Pinot Noir–like’ side: perfumed, finely etched, and driven by freshness rather than sheer power. Aged extensively in barrique yet never feeling forced or overdone, this Roero Riserva marries depth of flavor with a poised, almost cool-climate character that makes it both serious and irresistibly drinkable.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the Roero Riserva Sudisfà 2021 presents a luminous garnet core with brick-red nuances at the rim, typical of Nebbiolo even in its youth. The nose unfolds in layers: ripe dark cherry and blackcurrant are joined by a hint of blueberry yogurt, violets, and rose petals, followed by cooler notes of mint and wild herbs, and deeper suggestions of earth, leather, and a touch of fine tobacco. The oak is beautifully integrated, supporting the aromatics rather than dominating them.
On the palate, the wine is full-flavored yet finely balanced, with concentrated dark fruit carried by silky, fine-grained tannins. The texture is both structured and caressing, giving the wine a sense of lift rather than weight. A delicate, well-judged acidity and a thread of mineral tension give the impression of freshness and precision, almost echoing a cool-climate red despite its Piemontese origins. The finish is long, mineral and savory, leaving notes of herbs, spice and dried flowers that invite another sip. While already approachable with aeration, this 2021 has excellent aging potential; expect it to develop greater complexity and tertiary notes over the next 8–12 years, and potentially longer in a proper cellar.
Production
Sudisfà comes from selected Nebbiolo parcels in the Roero hills of Piemonte, where sandy, calcareous soils and steep slopes give wines with fragrance, finesse and a distinctive mineral edge. The vineyards benefit from good diurnal temperature shifts, helping to preserve acidity and aromatic complexity in the grapes. Harvest is typically carried out by hand, allowing for an exacting selection of bunches in the vineyard and again at the winery. After gentle crushing and fermentation on the skins, the wine undergoes a long maceration to extract fine tannins and nuanced aromatics rather than overt power. It is then aged in barrique for over two years, with careful use of oak to frame the fruit and enhance texture without overshadowing Nebbiolo’s varietal character, before further bottle aging prior to release as a Roero Riserva.
Food & Serving
This Roero Riserva pairs beautifully with classic Piemontese dishes such as tajarin with ragù, brasato al Barolo–style braises (using Roero, of course), and veal or game birds with truffle. Its refined tannins and aromatic complexity also complement mushroom risotto, roasted root vegetables, and hard cheeses like aged Pecorino or Parmigiano Reggiano. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended in its youth to allow the bouquet to fully open and the tannins to soften, especially if served alongside richer or more savory dishes.
Producer
Azienda Agricola Negro Angelo e Figli, led today by Giovanni Negro and his family, is one of the historic names of Roero and a key reference for Nebbiolo and Arneis in the region. With roots in viticulture dating back several generations, the Negro family has played an important role in demonstrating that Roero can produce wines of real pedigree, capable of standing alongside the great wines of the Langhe. Their work in identifying top vineyard sites, championing the unique sandy Roero terroir, and refining vineyard and cellar practices has earned them a strong reputation among critics and enthusiasts alike. Wines like Roero Riserva Sudisfà highlight the estate’s commitment to expressing Nebbiolo with both authenticity and elegance, reinforcing Negro Angelo e Figli’s status as a benchmark producer in Piemonte.
