Description
Le Petit Mouton de Mouton Rothschild 2020 is the characterful second wine of the legendary Premier Cru Classé estate in Pauillac, crafted with the same rigor and precision as the grand vin. In this vintage, it benefits from an exceptional selection, as many parcels that usually contribute to Château Mouton Rothschild itself were instead dedicated to Le Petit Mouton. The result is a refined yet generous Bordeaux that captures the energy and concentration of the 2020 vintage while remaining accessible earlier in its life.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Le Petit Mouton shows a deep, vibrant ruby-purple color, hinting at both youth and intensity. The nose opens with pure blackcurrant (cassis) layered with notes of cigar paper, violet and subtle cedar, supported by a touch of dark cherry, graphite and a whisper of toast from barrel aging.
On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied, fleshy and enveloping, with a broad, welcoming attack and a dense, layered mid-palate. Ripe black fruits are framed by fine, polished tannins and a fresh, well-integrated acidity that keeps the wine lively rather than heavy. Flavors of cassis, plum and blackberry mingle with hints of tobacco leaf, cocoa and spice, leading into a long, harmonious finish. While already approachable in its youth after some air, this 2020 has the structure and concentration to evolve gracefully for 10–15 years, gaining complexity and softness with time in bottle.
Production
Le Petit Mouton 2020 is sourced from the gravelly terraces of Pauillac, a hallmark terroir that provides excellent drainage and ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon to ripen fully while retaining aromatic precision. In this vintage, the grand vin was drawn almost exclusively from the estate’s central gravel terraces, meaning that several top-quality parcels—some of which contributed to Château Mouton Rothschild in years like 2018—were instead devoted to Le Petit Mouton, significantly raising its level. Grapes are harvested by hand in small crates, with meticulous sorting in the vineyard and at the winery to ensure only pristine fruit is used. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled vats, allowing for gentle extraction of color, tannin and aroma, followed by aging in French oak barrels (a significant proportion of which are often new or recent-vintage), where the wine gains additional structure, complexity and finesse before bottling.
Food & Serving
This 2020 Pauillac is a natural partner for rich, flavorful dishes such as grilled or roast lamb, ribeye steak, beef short ribs, duck breast or game birds with herb-infused sauces. It also pairs beautifully with hard cheeses like aged Comté or Manchego, and mushroom-based dishes, especially with truffle or roasted root vegetables. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and balance. Young bottles will benefit from decanting for 1–2 hours before serving to soften the tannins and allow the layered aromas of blackcurrant, cigar nuances and violets to fully emerge.
Producer
Château Mouton Rothschild is one of Bordeaux’s most celebrated estates, located in Pauillac on the Left Bank of the Gironde, and classified as a Premier Cru Classé since 1973 after a historic reclassification. Owned by the Rothschild family since the mid-19th century, it has long been renowned for producing powerful, opulent Cabernet Sauvignon–based wines that combine intensity with elegance. Le Petit Mouton de Mouton Rothschild is the château’s second wine, created to express the estate’s style in a slightly more approachable, earlier-drinking form while benefiting from the same vineyards, technical team and exacting standards as the grand vin. Over the decades, Mouton Rothschild has become an icon not just for its wines but also for its artistic labels and pioneering spirit, cementing its status as a benchmark producer in Bordeaux and beyond.
