Description
Mottura Primitivo di Manduria Stilio 2023 is a rich, sun-drenched red that captures the bold character of southern Italy in every glass. Crafted from old-vine Primitivo grown in the heart of Apulia’s Manduria zone, it offers generous fruit, velvety texture, and a beautifully polished style. This cuvée showcases why Primitivo di Manduria has long been considered one of Puglia’s most expressive and age-worthy red wines.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Stilio 2023 shows a deep ruby-red hue with purple highlights, hinting at its concentration and youthful energy. The nose is inviting and intense, with layers of ripe black cherry, plum, and blackberry compote, wrapped in notes of sweet spice, licorice, vanilla, and a touch of cocoa and Mediterranean herbs.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and plush, with a generous core of dark fruit balanced by soft, rounded tannins. Flavors of blackberries, dried figs, and cherry liqueur are lifted by hints of clove, black pepper, tobacco, and dark chocolate. The finish is long, warm, and smooth, with a gentle balsamic note that adds complexity. While already very approachable in its youth, this vintage has the structure to evolve gracefully for 5–7 years, gaining more tertiary notes of leather, spice, and dried fruit over time.
Production
The grapes for Mottura Primitivo di Manduria Stilio 2023 come from selected vineyards in Manduria, in the Salento area of Apulia, where the warm Mediterranean climate, abundant sunshine, and cooling sea breezes help Primitivo achieve optimal ripeness. The vines are typically rooted in a mix of red, iron-rich clay and limestone soils, which contribute both richness and freshness to the wine. Harvest is generally carried out by hand to preserve berry integrity and allow for strict selection of only the healthiest, ripest clusters. In the cellar, the grapes undergo temperature-controlled fermentation to extract color, aroma, and tannin gently, followed by maturation—often in oak barrels or a combination of oak and stainless steel—to round out the texture, integrate the tannins, and add subtle notes of spice and vanilla without overshadowing the natural fruit.
Food & Serving
This Primitivo di Manduria is a natural partner for hearty, flavor-packed dishes. Think grilled or roasted red meats, slow-braised lamb, beef stew, and rich ragù-based pastas, as well as wood-fired pizza with spicy salami, aged hard cheeses, and dishes featuring tomato, roasted peppers, or Mediterranean herbs. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its balance of fruit and spice. A brief decant of 30 minutes to an hour is recommended for young bottles like the 2023 vintage to allow the wine to open up, soften the tannins, and fully express its aromatic complexity.
