Description
La Dame de Montrose is the elegant second wine of Château Montrose, one of Saint-Estèphe’s most celebrated estates and a 2nd Growth of the 1855 Classification. This six-bottle wooden case brings together the 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016 vintages, offering a rare opportunity to experience the estate’s signature style across several expressive years.
Tasting Notes
La Dame de Montrose typically shows a deep garnet color with a polished, classic Bordeaux profile. The nose combines blackcurrant, ripe plum, cedar, earth, truffle and subtle dark chocolate notes, often with a mineral edge and a touch of spice. On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied, with firm but refined tannins, layered fruit and a balanced, restrained structure that reflects the estate’s Saint-Estèphe character.
Compared with the grand vin, La Dame de Montrose is usually a little more approachable in youth, while still retaining excellent depth and the poise to age well. The best vintages from this selection, especially 2015 and 2016, can continue to develop beautifully over the coming years, gaining further complexity and nuance in bottle.
Production
The vineyards of Château Montrose sit on the gravelly, well-drained soils of Saint-Estèphe with a clay subsoil that helps retain water during dry periods, an ideal terroir for Cabernet Sauvignon. Grapes are harvested by hand and carefully sorted twice, first mechanically and then by hand, before gentle pressing and a long, temperature-controlled maceration of around 25 days. The wine is then aged for about 12 months in barrels, with around 30% new oak, allowing the fruit and structure to remain in balance.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with roast lamb, beef fillet, duck breast, venison and rich mushroom-based dishes, as well as hard cheeses such as Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 1–2 hours if opening a younger vintage to allow the aromas and texture to open fully.
Producer
Château Montrose has a long and distinguished history dating back to the late 18th century, when it was separated from Château Calon-Ségur. Classified as a 2nd Growth in 1855, the estate has become a benchmark producer in Saint-Estèphe, known for powerful, structured wines with remarkable consistency. Today, Montrose is also recognized for its strong commitment to sustainability, including major solar energy investments and a meticulous approach to vineyard management and cellar work.
