Description
Montrose 1995 is a classic, slowly unfurling Saint-Estèphe that is now entering a beautiful drinking window, rewarding the patience of collectors. This Second Growth Bordeaux marries power with elegance, showing the hallmark structure of Montrose wrapped in supple, mature complexity. From a traditionally styled vintage built for age, this bottle offers a snapshot of Left Bank claret at full stride.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Montrose 1995 shows a deep garnet colour with a brick-hued rim, reflecting nearly three decades of graceful evolution. The nose is complex and layered, opening with red and blackcurrants, moving into cigar box, rich clay earth, graphite, black truffle and a subtle dried floral note.
On the palate it is medium to full-bodied, concentrated and still remarkably vibrant, with a core of cassis, redcurrant and plum framed by savoury tobacco leaf, cedar, leather and earthy minerality. The tannins, once formidable, have become ripe and rounded, lending structure without harshness, while lively acidity keeps the wine fresh and focused. The finish is long, dry and aristocratic, echoing forest floor, truffle and spice. Fully into its prime but in no danger of fading, this vintage should continue to drink beautifully for the next 10–15 years, depending on storage.
Production
Château Montrose lies on one of Saint-Estèphe’s finest gravelly hilltops, with deep gravel and clay soils overlooking the Gironde estuary—conditions ideal for slow, even ripening of Cabernet Sauvignon and its Bordelais companions. The 1995 vintage was harvested by hand, with strict selection in the vineyard and at the sorting table to retain only perfectly ripe, healthy fruit. Traditional Left Bank vinification was employed: fermentation in temperature-controlled vats, followed by extended maceration to extract colour, structure and depth. The wine was then aged in French oak barrels—typically a high proportion of new oak for Montrose—for around 18–24 months, allowing the powerful tannic frame to integrate and the wine’s distinctive aromatics to develop.
Food & Serving
This mature Montrose is an outstanding partner for classic, savoury dishes: roast lamb with rosemary and garlic, dry-aged ribeye, venison loin, or slow-braised beef cheeks all play beautifully with its earthy, truffled complexity. It also works well alongside game birds, mushroom-based dishes, truffle risotto and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at 17–18°C (around 63–65°F). For best expression, stand the bottle upright for several hours to allow sediment to settle, then decant gently 45–60 minutes before serving to let the wine open without losing its delicate mature nuances.
Producer
Château Montrose is one of the great names of Bordeaux’s Left Bank, classified as a Deuxième Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 Classification and long regarded as a reference point for powerful, ageworthy wines from Saint-Estèphe. Planted largely to Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot and smaller amounts of other Bordeaux varieties, the estate has built a reputation for wines that combine intense structure with remarkable longevity. Under successive generations of dedicated ownership—most recently the Bouygues family—Montrose has invested heavily in vineyard and cellar improvements while staying true to its traditional style. Vintages such as 1995 highlight the château’s strength in more structured years, producing wines that take time to blossom but, when mature, offer profound aromatic complexity and depth.
