Description
Monticino Rosso Le Morine Sangiovese 2007 Riserva is a mature, classically styled Sangiovese from the rolling hills of Romagna, crafted by the family-run Fattoria Monticino Rosso. Sourced from the estate’s prized “Olmo” cru, this Superiore wine captures the character of the region with depth, refinement and a beautifully evolved bouquet. With nearly two decades of age, it offers a rare opportunity to experience Sangiovese at full maturity, in optimal condition and with authentic cellar charm.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this 2007 Riserva shows a deep garnet core with brick-tinged edges, a clear sign of its graceful evolution in bottle. The nose opens with dried cherries, macerated red berries and plum compote, unfolding into notes of leather, tobacco leaf, underbrush and a suggestion of dried roses and violets, supported by hints of sweet spice and a touch of earthy minerality.
On the palate, the wine is elegant and harmonious rather than powerful, with Sangiovese’s signature acidity still keeping the fruit lively. Flavors of sour cherry, dried fig and red currant are layered with savory tones of cedar, cured meat, forest floor and a gentle balsamic echo. The tannins have resolved into a fine, silky texture, giving a long, nuanced finish. At this stage, the wine is drinking at or near its peak; it should continue to hold and give pleasure for a few more years if well stored, but is ideally enjoyed now to appreciate its tertiary complexity.
Production
Le Morine Sangiovese Riserva comes from Monticino Rosso’s “Olmo” cru, a vineyard characterized by clay- and sand-based soils that contribute both structure and fragrance to the wine. The site benefits from cooling breezes from the nearby sea, which moderate temperatures and help preserve acidity and aromatic freshness, even in warmer vintages. With 20-year-old vines planted at a high density of around 5,000 plants per hectare, yields are naturally limited, concentrating flavor in the grapes. The Sangiovese is harvested by hand to ensure careful selection of bunches, particularly important for a Riserva wine. After fermentation, the wine is aged for 12 months in barrel, allowing it to gain texture, complexity and spice-laced nuances, followed by a minimum of 6 months of bottle aging before release, where the components integrate and the wine’s structure refines.
Food & Serving
This mature Sangiovese Riserva pairs beautifully with classic Italian dishes such as slow-braised beef, ossobuco, ragù alla bolognese, or lamb shank with rosemary and garlic. It also complements aged hard cheeses, mushroom-based dishes, truffle pasta and rustic charcuterie. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity without emphasizing alcohol. Given its age, decant gently for about 30 minutes to remove any sediment and allow the wine to open, but avoid extended aeration, as its delicacy is part of the charm.
Producer
Fattoria Monticino Rosso is a family-run estate rooted in the Romagna region of Italy, founded in 1965 when Antonio Zeoli acquired his first 13-hectare plot known as “Olmo.” Over the years, Antonio’s sons, Luciano and Gianni, joined the business and expanded the property with the 24-hectare “Monticino Rosso” farm in 1985, which gave the estate its current name. Today, Monticino Rosso is recognized for expressing the specific character of Romagna through carefully tended vineyards and thoughtfully produced Sangiovese, especially from their cru sites. The Le Morine Sangiovese Superiore from Olmo reflects the family’s longstanding commitment to quality, regional authenticity and respectful farming on their hillside plots.
