Description
Montedolce Etna Bianco Gocce di Rugiada 2019 is a refined Sicilian white that captures the cool mountain side of Mount Etna in the glass. Made from native grapes Carricante and Catarratto, it offers a vibrant, mineral-driven profile that stands apart from more conventional Italian whites. As an Etna Bianco, it carries the heritage of one of Italy’s most exciting volcanic terroirs, where wine has been cultivated on lava terraces for centuries.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Gocce di Rugiada 2019 shows a luminous straw-yellow color with delicate green reflections, hinting at its freshness and youth. The nose is elegantly layered: citrus zest (lemon and grapefruit), crunchy green apple, and white peach mingle with notes of wild herbs, chamomile, and a distinct saline, flinty minerality typical of Etna’s volcanic soils.
On the palate, this Etna Bianco is precise and focused, with lively acidity and a lean, tensile structure. Flavors of lemon pulp, ripe pear and yellow plum are wrapped around a core of wet stone, sea spray, and subtle almond. The finish is long, refreshing and slightly savory, inviting another sip. While already very enjoyable now, the 2019 vintage has the structure and acidity—especially from Carricante—to develop more complexity over the next 3–5 years, gaining notes of honey, dried herbs and brioche with bottle age.
Production
Azienda Agricola Montedolce draws its grapes from high-altitude vineyards on the slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily, where volcanic soils of ash, basalt and sand provide excellent drainage and a distinctive mineral character. The combination of strong day–night temperature swings and steady sea breezes helps preserve acidity and aromatic finesse in Carricante and Catarratto. Harvest is typically done by hand to ensure careful selection of healthy, perfectly ripe clusters on the steep, terraced vineyards. In the cellar, the grapes are gently pressed and the must is fermented at controlled, cool temperatures in stainless steel to preserve freshness and varietal purity. Aging on fine lees for a period of time adds texture, subtle complexity and a polished mouthfeel without overshadowing the wine’s bright, mineral-driven character.
Food & Serving
This Etna Bianco is a natural match for seafood—think grilled prawns, seared scallops, oysters, clams, or simply prepared white fish with lemon and herbs. It also pairs beautifully with sushi, octopus salad, Sicilian-style swordfish, vegetable-based primi like pasta alle vongole, risotto with citrus or herbs, as well as fresh cheeses and light antipasti. Serve well-chilled but not icy, ideally at 8–10°C (46–50°F), to let the aromatics open gradually. Decanting is not strictly necessary, but a brief 15–20 minutes in the glass or carafe can help the wine unfold its more subtle herbal and mineral nuances.
Producer
Azienda Agricola Montedolce is a small, quality-focused estate on the slopes of Mount Etna, dedicated to expressing the unique character of Sicily’s great volcano through its native grape varieties. Working in one of Italy’s most dynamic and admired wine regions, Montedolce emphasizes careful vineyard work, low yields and respectful cellar practices to let Carricante, Catarratto and other local grapes speak clearly of their origin. Etna has become a reference point for volcanic wines worldwide, and producers like Montedolce contribute to the zone’s growing reputation for elegant, ageworthy whites and reds that combine Mediterranean sun with mountain freshness and minerality.
