Description

MIRAT Gran Reserva 2005 is a mature, classically styled Ribera del Duero Tempranillo that brings together power, refinement and long bottle age in one compelling wine. Crafted only in outstanding vintages, this Gran Reserva showcases the depth and structure that have made Ribera del Duero one of Spain’s most prestigious red wine regions. With two decades of evolution, it offers the complexity and elegance that collectors and serious wine lovers seek.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, MIRAT Gran Reserva 2005 shows a deep garnet core with brick-orange reflections at the rim, a clear sign of its graceful age. The wine is limpid and concentrated, with slow-moving tears that hint at both richness and structure. The nose is layered and expressive, opening with dried black fruits, ripe plum and blackberry compote, evolving into tobacco leaf, leather, cedar, roasted coffee and sweet spices from its extended oak aging. Subtle notes of dried fig, balsamic, vanilla and earthy truffle emerge with air. On the palate, it is silky yet still firmly structured, with well-integrated tannins and a vibrant acidity that keeps the wine lively despite its age. Flavors of dark cherry, blackcurrant and dried red fruit intertwine with cocoa, cigar box, clove and a touch of savory herbs. The finish is long, nuanced and persistent, with a gentle, mature sweetness of fruit and spice. Well-cellared bottles can continue to evolve for a few more years, but this vintage is now in a beautiful drinking window, showing fully developed tertiary complexity.

Production
Valdeviñas Mirat works with carefully tended vineyards in Ribera del Duero, where high-altitude sites, extreme temperature shifts between day and night, and poor, well-drained soils naturally limit yields and concentrate flavor in the Tempranillo grapes. A green harvest is carried out in the growing season, so only the best, most perfectly ripened bunches are left on the vines. Harvesting is done entirely by hand to protect the fruit and allow for strict selection in the vineyard and at the winery. In line with the estate’s Bordeaux-inspired philosophy, the grapes undergo maceration and fermentation in French oak, extracting color, tannin and aromatic depth. The wines are then aged for extended periods—well beyond the minimum 12 months in barrel—before bottling and further bottle maturation, a regimen that underpins the longevity and finesse of MIRAT’s Gran Reserva wines.

Food & Serving
This is a gastronomic red that shines alongside richly flavored, slow-cooked dishes: think roast lamb with herbs, braised beef short ribs, game (venison, wild boar), or aged hard cheeses like Manchego Curado. It also pairs beautifully with mushroom-based dishes, truffle risotto, or roasted root vegetables and charred peppers. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for best expression. Given its age and complexity, decanting for 45–60 minutes is recommended to allow the wine to open fully and to separate it from any natural sediment that may have formed in the bottle.

Producer
Valdeviñas Mirat was founded in 1999 by the Spanish agricultural organisation Mirat together with a group of winegrowers united by a strong commitment to quality, sustainability and respect for the land. From the outset, their ambition has been to create wines of high quality and exclusivity in Ribera del Duero, taking inspiration from the great châteaux of Bordeaux while adapting techniques to local Spanish conditions. Manual harvesting, green harvesting in the vineyard, and careful work with French oak are central to their philosophy. All their wines undergo maceration and fermentation in oak, followed by at least 12 months of barrel aging, resulting in structured reds with impressive aging potential. Within the region, Valdeviñas Mirat has earned a reputation for producing long-lived, characterful Tempranillo wines that highlight both the power and the elegance of Ribera del Duero.
