Description
Michael Teschke Spätburgunder Mutter 2012 is a rare, characterful Pinot Noir from one of Rheinhessen’s most singular vintners. Crafted from old vines and farmed with an almost obsessive respect for nature, it captures the quiet depth and nuance that Teschke became known for. With his vineyards now sold and production ended, this bottling stands as a finite and highly personal snapshot of a celebrated chapter in German wine.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2012 Mutter Spätburgunder shows a translucent ruby core with garnet reflections at the rim, a clear sign of graceful evolution rather than fatigue. The nose opens slowly but insistently: wild red cherry, dried cranberry and rose petals are layered with forest floor, cedar shavings, black tea and a faint hint of smoke and dried herbs.
On the palate, this is a Pinot of finesse rather than power. The texture is silky yet driven by a fine, linear acidity that keeps the wine vibrant and precise. Delicate red berry fruit—sour cherry, redcurrant, and a touch of raspberry—interweaves with savory notes of mushroom, underbrush, and a subtle, earthy spice. Tannins are ultra-fine and well-resolved, giving structure without grip. At this stage, the 2012 is in a beautiful drinking window, with tertiary nuances emerging, but it still has the freshness to continue evolving for several more years under good cellar conditions.
Production
Teschke’s Mutter Spätburgunder comes from old vines rooted in the rolling hills of Rheinhessen near Gau-Algesheim, where loess, clay, and limestone soils provide both mineral tension and warmth for optimal Pinot ripening. The vineyards were farmed in a highly natural, biodiversity-focused manner, with minimal intervention, extensive hand work, and deep respect for the surrounding flora and fauna. Harvest was carried out by hand to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy berries made it to the cellar. In the winery, Teschke favored a gentle, patient approach: spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts, minimal extraction, and careful aging—often in used oak barrels—allowed the wine’s vineyard character to shine without makeup or artifice.
Food & Serving
This elegant Spätburgunder is a natural partner for refined, subtly flavored dishes: roasted duck breast, veal tenderloin, herb-crusted lamb, or mushroom-based cuisine such as wild mushroom risotto or truffle pasta. It also pairs beautifully with soft to semi-hard cheeses like aged Camembert, Tomme, or a mild, nutty Bergkäse. Serve at 14–16°C (57–61°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and maintain its freshness. A gentle decant of 30–45 minutes helps the wine open up, especially if enjoyed on the younger side of its drinking window, but older bottles should be handled delicately and decanted only to remove sediment.
Producer
Weingut Michael Teschke in Gau-Algesheim became something of a cult address in Rheinhessen for those seeking authentic, vineyard-driven wines made with an almost radical dedication to nature. Teschke was known for living with and among his old vines, treating his vineyards as living ecosystems rather than raw material for production. In a region that has rapidly risen to international prominence, his work stood out for its quiet integrity and unwavering focus on quality over quantity. The difficult decision to sell his vineyards in 2021 marked the end of an era, making remaining bottles of his wines—such as this 2012 Mutter Spätburgunder—precious reminders of a winemaker who helped redefine what Rheinhessen Pinot Noir can be.
