Description
Miani Rosso 2020 is a rare and characterful red blend from one of Friuli’s most sought‑after producers. Crafted in minuscule quantities, it marries Bordeaux varieties with the native Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso to create a wine of depth, tension and unmistakable personality. This cuvée stands out for its combination of power and precision, expressing the cool, limestone‑rich hills of Friuli-Venezia Giulia with remarkable clarity.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Miani Rosso 2020 shows a deep ruby color with youthful violet reflections, hinting at its concentration and vitality. The nose is intense and layered: blackcurrant, ripe plum and dark cherry from the Cabernet and Merlot, intertwined with wild berries, violets, graphite, tobacco leaf and a subtle herbal lift. Spicy notes of pepper, clove and understated oak add further complexity.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet finely sculpted, with dense, dark fruit framed by vibrant acidity and firmly woven, ultra-fine tannins. Cabernet Franc brings aromatic lift and savory nuance, while Refosco adds freshness, a touch of wildness, and a gently bitter edge that lengthens the finish. Expect a long, persistent aftertaste with notes of cocoa, licorice and mineral undertones. While already impressive in youth, this wine is built to evolve gracefully; with proper cellaring, it has the potential to develop additional complexity over 10–15 years or more, gaining tertiary notes of leather, forest floor and dried flowers.
Production
The Miani Rosso 2020 is sourced from low‑yielding vineyards in the hilly zones of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, where a mix of marl and sandstone (ponca), along with good diurnal temperature swings, fosters concentrated yet finely balanced fruit. Vines are meticulously tended and yields are kept extremely low, with harvesting carried out by hand in small crates to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes are selected. In the cellar, the varieties are vinified with great care, typically undergoing temperature‑controlled fermentation to preserve aromatic purity and structure, followed by aging in quality oak (often barriques) to integrate tannins and add subtle spice without overpowering the fruit. Minimal intervention, careful racking and a focus on precision allow the wine to express its terroir with intensity and finesse.
Food & Serving
Miani Rosso 2020 is a natural partner for refined, flavorful dishes such as grilled or roasted lamb, aged ribeye, beef tagliata, venison, or slow-braised short ribs. It also pairs beautifully with rich ragùs, truffle dishes, porcini‑based pastas, and mature hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or aged Montasio. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Bordeaux-style glasses to showcase its aromatic complexity. Decanting for 1–2 hours before serving is recommended in its youth to allow the wine to open up and fully reveal its depth.
Producer
Miani is a tiny, cult winery in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, renowned among collectors and sommeliers for producing some of Italy’s most concentrated and expressive whites and reds. Under the obsessive care of Enzo Pontoni, Miani has built a reputation for extreme vineyard selection, ultra‑low yields and an unwavering commitment to quality over quantity. The estate’s wines, often released in very limited numbers, have played a key role in demonstrating that Friuli can produce world‑class reds as well as whites, gaining high acclaim from international critics and a loyal following among enthusiasts who prize purity, intensity and a strong sense of place.
