Description
Mauro Marengo Barbera d'Alba Superiore 2021 is a richly structured expression of Barbera from the rolling hills of Piedmont. Classified as *Superiore*, it spends extra time in both cellar and wood, gaining depth, polish, and complexity without losing the grape’s hallmark freshness. This is Barbera with added gravitas: darker fruit, firmer structure, and a more serious, ageworthy profile than the everyday versions of the style.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a deep ruby color with violet reflexes, hinting at its concentration and youthful energy. The nose is generous yet refined, with ripe black cherry, plum, and blackberry layered over notes of sweet spice, licorice, a touch of cocoa, and a subtle smokiness from its time in wood.
On the palate, this Barbera d'Alba Superiore is full-bodied and vividly flavored, balancing dark fruit intensity with the grape’s naturally vibrant, precise acidity. Juicy black cherry and mulberry meet hints of black pepper, clove, and dried herbs, while well-integrated oak adds a gentle frame of vanilla and toast. The tannins are firm but polished, giving structure without harshness, and the finish is long, fresh, and savory. Enjoy it now for its vivid fruit and energy, or cellar it for 5–8 years to allow the spice, tertiary notes, and texture to evolve further.
Production
Sourced from Barbera vines rooted in the calcareous clay and marl soils around Alba, this wine reflects the classic Piedmontese terroir that gives Barbera both ripeness and tension. Grapes are typically harvested by hand to ensure optimal selection and preserve fruit integrity, often at relatively low altitudes where Barbera can fully mature. In the cellar, the must undergoes temperature-controlled fermentation to capture aromatic purity and varietal character, followed by extended maturation that qualifies it as *Superiore*: at least one extra year of aging overall, including a minimum of six months in wooden barrels. This time in wood adds structure, spice, and texture while maintaining the clarity and freshness that define the style.
Food & Serving
This Barbera d'Alba Superiore pairs beautifully with rich, savory dishes such as ragù alla piemontese, braised beef, lamb shanks, osso buco, or roasted game birds. It also works well with truffle dishes, aged cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano and Pecorino, and hearty mushroom pastas or risottos. Serve at 16–18°C to highlight both its fruit and structure. Decanting for 30–60 minutes before serving will help the wine open up its darker fruit tones and spice, especially in the first few years after release.
Producer
Mauro Marengo is a small, quality-focused producer rooted in the traditional landscape of Piedmont, working with indigenous varieties that have made the region world-famous. Based around Alba, Marengo’s approach emphasizes meticulous vineyard work and thoughtful, time-honored cellar practices to express Barbera with clarity and authenticity. While not among the largest estates in the region, the winery’s commitment to careful selection, moderate yields, and judicious use of oak has earned it a reputation among knowledgeable drinkers for offering Barbera d'Alba with real character, balance, and a strong sense of place.
