Description
Mathieu Châteauneuf-du-Pape Centenaire 2017 in magnum is a powerful yet refined expression of the southern Rhône, crafted from old-vine Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah. Bottled in the generous magnum format, this cuvée is built for long, graceful aging and special occasions. The “Centenaire” name nods to the estate’s venerable vines and centuries-long family heritage, capturing the soul of traditional Châteauneuf-du-Pape in a single, commanding bottle.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Centenaire shows a deep, dense ruby color with garnet highlights at the rim, reflecting its southern warmth and concentration. The nose is complex and inviting: ripe black cherry, raspberry compote and wild strawberry unfold alongside notes of garrigue (thyme, rosemary and lavender), black olive, licorice, pepper and a touch of cured meat and warm earth.
On the palate, this is full-bodied and layered, with a rich, velvety texture supported by fine, ripe tannins. Dark berry and red plum fruit dominate initially, followed by hints of cocoa, dried herbs, tobacco and baking spices that linger on a long, savory finish. The magnum format slows the evolution of the wine, so while it is already approachable with proper aeration, it will continue to develop additional complexity over 10–20 years, gaining more tertiary notes of leather, truffle and dried fig over time.
Production
Domaine André Mathieu farms some of the most historic parcels in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, rooted in the classic mix of galets roulés (rounded river stones), sandy soils and clay-limestone that store heat by day and release it through the cool nights. The mistral wind keeps the vines healthy and concentrates flavors, while the old Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah vines naturally produce low yields of intensely flavored fruit. Grapes are typically harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, with careful sorting in the vineyard and at the cellar door to ensure only the best clusters make it into the Centenaire cuvée. Vinification follows traditional Châteauneuf-du-Pape methods, with a long, gentle maceration to extract color, aroma and tannin, followed by élevage in a combination of neutral vessels (and often large old foudres) that respect the fruit and terroir rather than imposing heavy oak flavors. The result is a wine that is both generous and classically structured, made in the authentic, time-honored style of the appellation.
Food & Serving
The richness and depth of the 2017 Centenaire make it a superb partner for hearty, flavorful dishes. Think slow-braised lamb shank with rosemary, roast duck, beef daube Provençale, game birds, or grilled ribeye with herb butter. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses and rustic dishes featuring mushrooms, lentils or Mediterranean spices. Serve at around 16–18°C (60–64°F); in warmer weather, a very light chill before opening helps preserve freshness. Given its concentration and youth in magnum, decanting for 1.5–3 hours is recommended to allow the wine to open fully and reveal its layered aromatics and supple texture.
Producer
Domaine André Mathieu is a true old-guard estate in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with the Mathieu family having tended vines in the region for roughly 400 years. This deep-rooted history translates into an intimate understanding of their plots and an unwavering commitment to traditional winemaking. Today, André Mathieu continues this legacy, crafting wines from all 13 permitted grape varieties and working with venerable Grenache vines, some dating back to the late 19th century. The domaine is respected locally for its steadfast defense of classic Châteauneuf-du-Pape character—complex, ageworthy reds that speak clearly of their terroir—while also offering excellent value in their broader Rhône range. The Centenaire bottling stands as one of the estate’s flagship expressions, highlighting both their oldest vines and their historic place in the appellation.
