The nose is layered and refined: delicate rose petals, dried violets and wild strawberries mingle with notes of blood orange, pomegranate, sweet spices, licorice, earthy truffle and a gentle undertone of cedar and tobacco. With air, more mineral and saline nuances emerge, a hallmark of this cru. On the palate, the wine is precise, vertical and tightly woven, with a core of red cherry, raspberry and cranberry framed by notes of anise, tar, savory herbs and crushed stone. Production
Vigna Rionda is a south to southwest-facing cru in Serralunga d’Alba, known for its calcareous marl soils rich in limestone and clay, which impart both structure and aromatic finesse to Nebbiolo. The site’s elevation and ventilated exposure create a distinctive microclimate: warm enough to ensure full ripeness but cool enough to preserve acidity and aromatic detail. Massolino farms these historic vines with great care, typically harvesting by hand in small crates to ensure meticulous selection of bunches in the vineyard. In the cellar, the grapes are traditionally vinified: extended maceration on the skins to extract fine tannins and complexity, followed by long aging—often around three years—in large, neutral Slavonian oak casks, and further bottle maturation before release. This classical approach allows the character of Vigna Rionda’s terroir to shine without overt oak influence.
