Description

Massolino Barolo Riserva Vigna Rionda 2017 in magnum format is a benchmark expression of one of Barolo’s most legendary crus. Sourced from the hallowed Vigna Rionda vineyard in Serralunga d’Alba, this Riserva combines depth, power and finely etched detail in a way that few wines can match. The 2017 vintage offers generous dark fruit wrapped in classic Nebbiolo structure, delivering both immediate appeal and serious cellaring potential.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Vigna Rionda Riserva shows a deep garnet core with brick-tinged reflections at the rim, already hinting at its noble evolution. The nose is intense and layered: dark cherry, plum and black raspberry intertwine with notes of black licorice, dried roses, iron filings, rusted metal, and subtle tobacco, all underpinned by hints of spice and earthy minerality. On the palate, the wine is concentrated yet supremely refined, with a seamless texture that glides across the mouth. Dark fruit—black cherry, blackberry and ripe red currant—is framed by firm but polished tannins, lively acidity and a lingering savory note. Nuances of tar, licorice, blood orange zest and warm stone add complexity as the wine opens. In magnum, the 2017 has a particularly long life ahead: it is already compelling now with air, but will gain in nuance and harmony over the next 10–20 years or more, depending on storage.

Production
Vigna Rionda is one of Barolo’s most revered single vineyards, sitting on the calcareous marl and sandstone slopes of Serralunga d’Alba, where high altitude and excellent exposure give Nebbiolo both power and finesse. Massolino farms the site meticulously, with hand-harvesting to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy bunches make it into the winery. After a careful selection, the grapes undergo traditional vinification, including extended maceration to extract structure, aroma and terroir character. The wine is then aged for a lengthy 36 months in large traditional oak casks, followed by a further 36 months of bottle aging before release, allowing the components to knit together into a profound and harmonious Barolo Riserva.

Food & Serving
This is a quintessential wine for rich, savory dishes: think braised beef cheeks, osso buco, aged Piemontese cheeses, truffle risotto, wild mushroom dishes, or roasted game such as venison or hare. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatics and balance; in magnum, it benefits greatly from generous aeration. Decant for at least 2–3 hours in its youth, and even mature bottles will reward a gentle decant to reveal the full spectrum of Vigna Rionda’s complexity.

Producer
Founded in 1896, Massolino is one of the great traditional estates of Serralunga d’Alba and a key reference point for classic Barolo. Generation after generation, the family has championed an authentic, terroir-driven style, with Vigna Rionda representing the jewel in their crown. Their holdings in this famed cru have helped cement Massolino’s reputation as a standard-bearer for Barolo of depth, longevity and elegance, and their Riserva bottlings from Vigna Rionda are consistently counted among the finest and most collectible wines of the region.
