Description
Masseria Li Veli Susumaniello 2021 is a characterful, dry rosé from the sun‑drenched Salento peninsula in Puglia, crafted entirely from the rare local Susumaniello grape. Offered here in an impressive 1.5 L magnum, it combines vibrant freshness with real depth and structure, making it as serious at the table as many reds. Once nearly forgotten, Susumaniello is now experiencing a well‑deserved renaissance, with Li Veli at the forefront of its revival.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this rosé shows a bright, luminous hue that sits between pale cherry and deep coral, with crystal‑clear brilliance and lively legs. The nose is expressive and layered, opening with ripe red berries and wild cherries, then darker notes of blackberry and cassis, intertwined with hints of Mediterranean herbs, cocoa and a subtle touch of licorice.
On the palate, it is fuller and more structured than a typical summer rosé, yet remains dry and finely balanced. Juicy blackcurrant and raspberry fruit are wrapped in a gentle, mouth‑coating texture, supported by well‑integrated acidity and very smooth, ripe tannins. A discreet spice note from the élevage underlines the long, persistent finish. While already delightful now, the wine has the structure to age gracefully for around 6–8 years from vintage, gaining additional complexity and a more savoury, herbal profile over time.
Production
The grapes come from vineyards in Salento IGP, where warm, sun‑soaked days, cool nights and constant breezes from the nearby Adriatic help maintain both ripeness and freshness. Vines are rooted in a mix of calcareous and clay soils that naturally limit yields and enhance concentration. The Susumaniello is harvested by hand at optimal maturity, carefully sorted, then gently destemmed. Fermentation takes place in temperature‑controlled stainless steel to preserve the grape’s vivid fruit and aromatic purity, followed by an extended maturation period, primarily in steel with a portion in French oak, to build texture, polish the tannins and add subtle complexity without overwhelming the fruit.
Food & Serving
This is a superb food rosé, ideal for richer dishes that would overpower lighter styles. It pairs beautifully with grilled lamb chops, slow‑cooked beef stews, hearty pasta with ragù, and flavourful Mediterranean cuisine such as aubergine parmigiana or roasted vegetables with herbs. It also works well with aged hard cheeses and charcuterie. Serve chilled at 10–12 °C; in its youth, a brief 15–20 minutes in a carafe or simply in large glasses helps the wine open up its layered aromatics and savoury depth, especially from magnum.
Producer
Masseria Li Veli is a historic estate on the Salento peninsula that has been revitalised as a flagship for high‑quality Puglian wines. Under the guidance of the Falvo family (known for elevating Avignonesi in Tuscany), Li Veli has become a reference point in southern Italy for its focus on native varieties such as Susumaniello, Negroamaro and Primitivo. The estate combines traditional vineyard practices with modern, precise winemaking to express the character of Salento’s terroir, and has played a key role in rescuing Susumaniello from obscurity, helping to establish it as one of the most exciting grapes in the region today.
