Description

Masi Valpolicella Classico Bonacosta 2024 is a modern take on one of Verona’s great traditional reds, crafted by one of the region’s most respected producers. Light on its feet yet full of character, this wine captures the easy-drinking charm that famously led Hemingway to call Valpolicella “as friendly as the house of a favorite brother.” Made from the classic local trio—Corvina, Rondinella and Molinara—it offers an elegant, refreshing style that’s perfect for everyday enjoyment and relaxed meals.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Bonacosta 2024 typically shows a bright, transparent ruby-red color with youthful violet highlights at the rim. It looks immediately inviting—luminous rather than dense—signaling a wine built on freshness rather than power. The nose is fragrant and pure, with aromas of red cherries, wild strawberries and redcurrants, lifted by notes of violets, a touch of fresh herbs and a faint hint of spice. On the palate, it’s medium-bodied, juicy and supple, with vibrant red fruit, soft tannins and a lively, mouthwatering acidity that keeps everything crisp and moreish. Expect flavors of cherry, raspberry and a little crunchy plum, backed by a subtle almond note on the finish. This is a wine meant to be enjoyed in its youth; while it can comfortably develop for 3–4 years, its charm lies in its immediate freshness and drinkability.

Production
Grown in the heart of the Valpolicella Classico zone near Verona, Bonacosta comes from hillside vineyards where stony, calcareous and well-drained soils help concentrate flavor while preserving acidity. The climate is moderated by nearby Lake Garda, giving warm days for ripeness and cool nights for aromatic lift. Grapes are harvested at optimal ripeness—often by hand to allow careful selection—and then gently crushed. Unlike Amarone, the fruit for Bonacosta is not dried; instead, Masi opts for a straightforward, temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel to protect the bright aromatics and fresh fruit character. The wine is then lightly matured—often in a mix of stainless steel and large neutral casks—aimed at softening edges without adding heavy oak influence, resulting in a clean, polished and approachable Valpolicella.

Food & Serving
This is a versatile food wine that shines with everyday Italian fare. It pairs beautifully with pasta dishes in tomato-based sauces, thin-crust pizza, antipasti, grilled chicken, charcuterie and lighter meat dishes such as pork loin or veal. It’s also a great match for medium-aged cheeses and rustic vegetable dishes like roasted peppers or mushrooms. Serve at around 15–17°C (59–63°F) to keep the fruit vibrant and the structure in balance. Decanting is not strictly necessary, but opening the bottle 15–20 minutes before serving will help the aromas fully express themselves.

Producer
Masi Agricola is one of Veneto’s flagship producers and a global reference for wines from Valpolicella and Amarone. With roots in the region dating back to the 18th century, Masi has played a key role in preserving and refining traditional Veronese grapes and techniques, while also bringing a modern, quality-driven approach to winemaking. Renowned for their expertise in appassimento (the drying of grapes) and for elevating local styles onto the international stage, Masi’s wines are consistently recognized by critics and wine lovers alike. Bonacosta is their classic expression of Valpolicella Classico—an ambassador for the region’s lighter, more convivial side and a benchmark for the style.
