Mas d'en Gil, Coma Blanca Priorat, 2017

Mas d'en Gil Coma Blanca 2017 is one of the jewels of the house: a powerful, characterful white from Priorat that is crafted to stand proudly after red wine on the table. With its old-vine fruit, singular slate-driven terroir, and impressive depth, it offers a rare and expressive take on premium Spanish white wine.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a bright, polished color with a layered, almost luminous presence. The nose is wonderfully complex, shifting between ripe stone fruit, citrus, apple and white flowers, then unfolding into spice, mineral notes and a subtle sweetness reminiscent of honey or ripe melon. On the palate, it is deep, textured and highly engaging, with juicy fruit framed by a clear mineral core and a long, nuanced finish. It is a wine that keeps revealing new details as it opens, and its structure suggests excellent aging potential, with the ability to develop even more savory and honeyed complexity over time.

Production
The fruit comes from four vineyards in the Coma valley, including two parcels of Grenache Blanc and one of Viura, all planted between 1941 and 1945. The vines grow on Llicorella soils, the distinctive Priorat slate and schist mix that lends the wine its intense mineral character and sense of place. After harvest, the wine spends six months aging in 500-liter oak barrels, followed by 18 months of bottle aging before release, helping to build texture, complexity and harmony while preserving the purity of the fruit.

Food & Serving
This is an excellent partner for grilled shellfish, lobster, prawns, or roast chicken with plenty of fresh Provençal herbs. Serve at around 12°C, ideally in large Burgundy glasses to let the aromatics open fully. A brief decant can be helpful if you want to bring out its layered complexity, though it is also rewarding poured straight from the bottle.
