Mas d'en Gil, Bellmunt Priorat, 2022

Mas d’en Gil Bellmunt Priorat 2022 is a beautifully expressive village wine from the southern part of Priorat, offering exceptional value and a clear sense of place. Certified as a Vi de Vila, it comes exclusively from Bellmunt and reflects the estate’s dedication to origin, elegance, and the mineral-driven style that defines Mas d’en Gil. Although it is the producer’s entry cuvée, it carries the seriousness and regional identity of a much grander wine.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a vibrant, inviting color with a polished, medium-deep intensity. The nose is generous and nuanced, with ripe red berries, stone fruit, and subtle savory notes lifted by a distinctive mineral edge. On the palate, it combines structure and finesse: juicy fruit, lively acidity, and finely grained tannins create a wine that feels both energetic and composed. The Garnacha and Cariñena blend gives it backbone and depth, while the slate-driven freshness keeps everything balanced. It is already highly enjoyable now, but will gain additional complexity over the next few years.

Production
The grapes come from 26- to 30-year-old vines in Bellmunt, in the southern Priorat, where the local Llicorella soils—various types of slate—impart the wine’s signature mineral tension and precision. The wine is certified Vi de Vila, guaranteeing that all fruit originates from parcels within Bellmunt. After harvest, it was aged for 10 months in a combination of 3,000-liter, 1,500-liter, and 225-liter oak barrels, followed by 12 months of bottle aging before release.

Food & Serving
This is a wonderfully versatile red that works with a wide range of dishes, from grilled meats and roast chicken to Mediterranean vegetable dishes, stews, and cured meats. Serve it at around 14°C in a large Burgundy glass to let the aromatics and texture open up fully. Decanting is not essential, but a short aeration can help if the wine is opened young.
