Description
Mas del Périé – Fabien Jouves Malbec Les Escures Bio 2024 is a pure-expression Cahors Malbec that rewrites what many expect from this historic appellation. Instead of the heavy, inky powerhouses the region is famous for, Les Escures offers a fresh, juicy, and remarkably digestible take on the grape, clocking in at a featherlight 11.5% alcohol. Certified organic and crafted in a low‑intervention style, it captures the energy of Malbec in its youth while staying true to the character of Southwest France.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Les Escures 2024 shows a vibrant, deep purple‑ruby hue with a bright rim, signaling its youth and freshness. The nose is lifted and expressive rather than brooding: think fresh blackberries, wild blueberries, and black cherries alongside violets, crushed raspberry, and a subtle herbal edge—thyme, sloe, and a gentle hint of graphite. As it opens, faint notes of spice and wet stone add complexity without ever feeling heavy.
On the palate, this is Malbec in a surprisingly agile, almost playful guise. The fruit is crunchy and pure, with dark berry and redcurrant flavors layered over a fine, chalky tannin structure. The low alcohol keeps it light on its feet, and a bright line of acidity gives the wine a mouthwatering, moreish quality. There is no aggressive oak here—just a touch of savory, earthy minerality anchoring the fruit. It drinks beautifully in its youth for its sheer drinkability and aromatic lift, but it should comfortably evolve over the next 3–5 years, gaining a bit more softness and complexity while retaining its freshness.
Production
Les Escures is sourced from high‑lying parcels around Trespoux‑Rassiels in Cahors, where limestone plateaus and clay‑limestone slopes give Malbec both ripeness and a distinctive mineral backbone. Farmed organically (and typically according to biodynamic principles), the vines are tended with low yields and careful work in the vineyard to ensure healthy, concentrated fruit without the need for heavy-handed winemaking. Grapes are usually harvested by hand at optimal ripeness to preserve acidity and moderate alcohol, then brought to the cellar for a gentle, low‑extraction vinification: spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts, limited punch‑downs or pump‑overs, and aging in neutral vessels (cement or large used wood) to keep the focus on fruit and terroir rather than oak. Sulfur additions are kept to a minimum, in line with Jouves’ natural‑leaning philosophy.
Food & Serving
This lighter, vivid style of Cahors is extremely versatile at the table. It’s a natural partner for charcuterie, grilled sausages, roast chicken, duck confit, or a simple bavette steak with herbs, but it also works beautifully with earthy vegetarian dishes such as lentil stew, mushroom ragù, roasted root vegetables, or aubergine gratin. Serve slightly cool for a red, around 14–16°C (57–61°F), to highlight its freshness and aromatic lift. A short decant of 20–30 minutes can help the wine open up its floral and mineral notes, but it’s not strictly necessary—Les Escures is made to be accessible and highly drinkable from the moment you pull the cork.
Producer
Mas del Périé is the domaine of Fabien Jouves, a key figure in the new wave of Cahors producers who have helped redefine what Malbec from this historic region can be. Based in Trespoux‑Rassiels, he took over family vineyards and gradually converted them to organic and biodynamic farming, gaining certification and a strong following among natural wine enthusiasts. Jouves’ approach—low yields, meticulous work in the vines, spontaneous fermentations, and minimal makeup in the cellar—stands in contrast to the heavily extracted, oak‑laden style once synonymous with Cahors. Today, Mas del Périé is recognized as one of the appellation’s most dynamic and influential estates, proving that Cahors can be both authentic and refreshingly modern.
