Description
Martinelli Bella Vigna Chardonnay is a richly expressive coastal California white that shows the family’s hallmark combination of intensity, restraint, and site-driven character. Crafted from a selection of Martinelli’s coastal vineyards, it reflects a longstanding Russian River Valley tradition dating back to 1887, with quality elevated further through the influence of consulting winemaker Helen Turley.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it pours a golden hue that hints at its generous style. The bouquet opens with citrus, pear, peach, caramel, and a creamy buttery note, giving it immediate appeal and complexity.
On the palate, ripe yellow apple, lemon custard, melon, citrus, oak, and a subtle stony edge unfold in a layered, well-balanced profile. The wine finishes long and polished, with enough structure and freshness to suggest good short- to medium-term aging potential.
Production
This Chardonnay is sourced from Martinelli’s coastal vineyards in California, where the cool maritime influence helps preserve freshness and aromatic lift. The family practices sustainable farming and intervenes as little as possible in the vineyard, relying on natural conditions to shape the fruit. In the cellar, winemaker Courtney Wagoner uses native yeast fermentation, followed by 10 months of maturation in oak barrels, with no fining or filtration.
Food & Serving
This is a natural match for rich seafood dishes such as lobster, crab, or roast scallops, as well as creamy poultry, mushroom risotto, or buttery pasta. Serve chilled, ideally around 10–12°C, and consider a short decant if you want the aromas to open up more quickly.
Producer
Martinelli is one of Northern California’s most respected wine families, with roots in Russian River Valley dating back to 1887. Now led by the sixth generation, Lee and Carolyn Martinelli, the estate has built a strong reputation for sustainable farming and deeply expressive wines. Their partnership with Helen Turley, who has served as consulting winemaker since 1992, has been instrumental in sharpening quality and bringing additional vineyard sites into focus. The winery is consistently highly rated by major critics and admired by Chardonnay and Pinot Noir lovers well beyond California.
