Description
Marchesi di Gresy Barbaresco Gaiun Martinenga 2017 is a refined single-parcel Barbaresco from one of Piemonte’s most respected family estates. Made from Nebbiolo grown in the Gaiun plot on the western side of Martinenga, it offers a slightly different expression from the estate’s other Barbareschi, with the elegance, depth, and pedigree that have made Marchesi di Gresy a benchmark name in the region.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a luminous garnet-red colour with a delicate orange rim, classic for mature Nebbiolo. The nose is layered and expressive, with aromas of plum, cherry, sweet tobacco, liquorice, black pepper, chocolate, and balsamic notes.
The palate is beautifully balanced and harmonious, combining pure fruit with silky tannins and a dry, focused structure. There is an initial sense of austerity in the vintage, but it opens with a bright cherry note and impressive energy. This is a wine with excellent aging potential and will reward further cellaring for those who can wait.
Production
The Gaiun parcel lies on the western side of the Martinenga vineyard, one of the most important single-estate sites in Barbaresco. The vines benefit from Martinenga’s south-facing exposure, blue marl soils, and elevations of around 220 to 280 metres, all of which help Nebbiolo ripen fully even in more challenging years. Harvest is done by hand, and the wine undergoes vinification before maturing for 28 months in small French oak barrels, followed by several months of bottle aging before release.
Food & Serving
This Barbaresco is a natural match for rich Piedmontese cuisine, including truffle dishes, braised veal, roast game, mushroom risotto, and aged cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C to bring out its aromatic complexity and elegant structure. Decanting is recommended, especially if opening it young, to allow the wine to fully unfold in the glass.
Producer
Tenute Cisa Asinari dei Marchesi di Grésy has belonged to the family since 1797 and is now run by the di Grésy family across four estates in Langhe and Monferrato. Alberto di Grésy began bottling the family’s own wines in the early 1970s, and today the estate vinifies only fruit from its own vineyards, including the celebrated Martinenga cru. Known for its commitment to quality, tradition, and sustainable winemaking, the estate has earned a reputation as one of Barbaresco’s standout producers.
