Description

Marchand Frères Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes 2021 is a classic red Burgundy that captures the depth and character of old-vine Pinot Noir from one of the Côte de Nuits’ most revered villages. Sourced from mature vineyards in Gevrey-Chambertin, it offers a refined balance of concentration, freshness and terroir-driven complexity. This cuvée pays homage to generations of Burgundian savoir-faire, where careful vineyard work and traditional winemaking come together in the glass.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes shows a vibrant, translucent ruby color with garnet reflections at the rim, signalling both purity of fruit and classic Burgundian structure. The nose is lifted and precise, with aromas of wild cherries, crushed raspberries and red currants layered over notes of violets, rose petals, damp earth and a subtle touch of finely integrated oak spice. On the palate, this wine is medium-bodied yet concentrated, with the intensity you expect from old vines rather than sheer weight. Juicy red and black cherry fruit is framed by energetic acidity and fine-grained, chalky tannins. Hints of forest floor, savory spice, and a delicate minerality emerge with air, giving the wine a long, nuanced finish. The 2021 vintage leans toward elegance and freshness, and this bottle will drink beautifully in its youth with a short decant but also reward cellaring over the next 8–12 years as the tannins soften and the tertiary notes of truffle, undergrowth and dried flowers unfold.

Production
The Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes bottling from Domaine Marchand Frères is crafted from old Pinot Noir vines rooted in the limestone and clay-rich soils that define the best terroirs of the Côte de Nuits. These well-established vines naturally produce lower yields, concentrating flavor and complexity in the grapes while preserving the hallmark finesse of Burgundy. Harvesting is typically done by hand to ensure careful selection of bunches in the vineyard. In the cellar, traditional Burgundian methods prevail: gentle destemming (often with a proportion of whole clusters depending on the vintage), cold maceration to enhance aroma, and a slow, temperature-controlled fermentation. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels—often with a modest proportion of new oak—to add structure and texture without overwhelming the purity of the fruit or the expression of Gevrey’s terroir.

Food & Serving
This Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes pairs beautifully with refined but flavorful dishes such as roast duck, veal chops with morel mushrooms, herb-crusted lamb, or classic coq au vin. It also shines alongside mushroom risotto, truffle pasta, or aged semi-hard cheeses like Comté and Tomme. Serve at 15–16°C (59–61°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and delicate texture. A 30–60 minute decant for younger bottles is recommended to allow the wine to open up fully, soften the tannins and reveal the more savory, earthy layers behind the bright Pinot fruit.

Producer
Domaine Marchand Frères is a traditional Burgundian estate with deep roots in the Côte d’Or, reflecting several generations of family involvement in viticulture and winemaking. Based in some of Burgundy’s most coveted appellations, the domaine has built a reputation for producing terroir-driven Pinot Noir that emphasizes finesse, definition, and a sense of place. Their holdings in and around Gevrey-Chambertin are particularly prized, allowing them to craft cuvées like this Vieilles Vignes that showcase the power and structure for which the village is known, while remaining true to an elegant, old-world style. Over time, Marchand Frères has earned the respect of Burgundy enthusiasts for its consistent quality and its commitment to traditional practices that let each climat speak clearly in the glass.
