Malavasi, Upupa Lugana 2024 White

Malavasi’s Upupa Lugana 2024 is a bright, expressive white that captures the freshness and finesse of its lakeside home just south of Lake Garda. Made from the native Turbiana grape, it shows the clean, mineral-driven style that has made Lugana one of Italy’s most admired white wine regions.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it offers a pale, luminous straw-yellow color. The nose opens with ripe apple, mandarin, lemon zest, and crisp green fruit, followed by delicate white flowers and a gentle almond note that gives it a classic Lugana signature. The palate is juicy and rounded, yet firmly lifted by fresh acidity and a subtle saline edge that keeps every sip lively. There is a fine balance of fruit and mineral tension, making it elegant, energetic, and highly drinkable. Best enjoyed young for its vibrant citrus and floral character, though it should hold nicely over the next few years.

Production
Upupa comes from Malavasi’s vineyards in Pozzolengo, in the southern part of Lake Garda, where warm sunshine, the cooling influence of the lake, and the Pelér wind create a distinctive microclimate. The vines are planted on limestone-rich soils with high mineral content, helping the Turbiana grape develop its characteristic finesse and tension. In the cellar, Malavasi keeps the winemaking clean and precise, with no oak aging, in order to preserve the grape’s pure varietal character and freshness.

Food & Serving
This is a versatile white that works beautifully as an aperitif and pairs especially well with sushi, vitello tonnato, seafood, and pasta with vongole. Serve well chilled, ideally around 8–10°C. Decanting is not necessary.
