Château Malartic Lagravière is located in Pessac-Léognan in the southern part of Bordeaux, on deep Günzian gravel soils over limestone and clay that are ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The well-drained gravel, combined with a temperate maritime climate, promotes deep root systems and slow, even ripening, contributing to the wine’s distinctive tension and aromatic complexity. Grapes are harvested parcel by parcel, typically by hand, with rigorous sorting to ensure only perfectly ripe berries make it into the grand vin. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled vats, often with a parcel-by-parcel approach to highlight the nuances of each block. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels (a significant proportion new) for around 15–18 months, with careful bâtonnage and racking to refine the tannins and integrate oak, while preserving the purity of fruit and the estate’s hallmark mineral, smoky elegance.
