Description
Livio Felluga Abbazia di Rosazzo 2021 is a refined, estate-grown white blend from one of Friuli-Venezia Giulia’s most historic and prized vineyard sites. Crafted from Friulano, Malvasia, Pinot Bianco, Ribolla Gialla and Sauvignon Blanc, it captures the essence of the Rosazzo hills in a single, harmonious wine. This cuvée stands out for its tension between richness and freshness, and its ability to age gracefully while remaining immediately approachable.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Abbazia di Rosazzo 2021 shows a luminous straw-yellow color with subtle golden reflections, hinting at both concentration and maturity of fruit. The nose is complex and layered: ripe orchard fruits (pear, yellow apple) and stone fruits mingle with citrus zest, white flowers, wild herbs and a delicate nutty, almond-like note from Friulano. Subtle hints of honey, acacia blossom, savory spice and wet stone add further depth as it opens in the glass.
On the palate, this is a textured yet extremely precise white. Medium to full-bodied, it combines a silky, almost creamy mid-palate with vibrant acidity and a distinctly mineral backbone. Flavors of pear, nectarine, lemon curd and white peach are interwoven with notes of chamomile, anise, thyme and a gentle saline snap that speaks clearly of Friuli’s hillside terroir. The finish is long, elegant and slightly savory, inviting another sip. While already beautifully expressive now, the structure and balance suggest a solid aging potential of 8–12 years from the vintage, during which it will gain further complexity and tertiary nuances of honey, nuts and dried flowers.
Production
Abbazia di Rosazzo is sourced from the historic Rosazzo hill in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, a terroir of marly, sandstone-based “ponca” soils that lend natural tension, salinity and aromatic finesse to white varieties. The vines grow on steep, well-exposed slopes benefiting from a unique microclimate, where cool breezes from the Alps meet warm Adriatic influences, allowing slow, even ripening with excellent acid retention. Grapes are carefully hand-harvested, variety by variety, at optimal maturity to preserve both aromatic purity and structural integrity. After gentle pressing, the must is clarified by gravity and each grape variety is vinified separately, typically in temperature-controlled stainless steel and partially in oak, to balance freshness with texture. The wine then spends additional time on fine lees with periodic bâtonnage, enhancing mouthfeel and complexity before blending and bottling, followed by further bottle aging prior to release.
Food & Serving
This wine is a superb match for refined seafood dishes such as seared scallops, grilled prawns, turbot, halibut or delicately prepared white fish, as well as risotto with shellfish or spring vegetables. It also pairs beautifully with poultry in light sauces, rabbit, veal carpaccio, and classic Friulian dishes featuring herbs and seasonal vegetables. The Friulano and Malvasia elements make it particularly friendly with cured meats, soft to semi-hard cheeses, and dishes with aromatic herbs or truffle. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) to highlight its freshness and aromatic detail. Decanting for 30 minutes is recommended, especially in its youth, to allow the layered bouquet to fully emerge.
Producer
Livio Felluga is one of the most influential and respected names in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, widely credited with helping to elevate the region’s reputation for world-class white wines. After relocating to Friuli in the mid-20th century, Livio Felluga painstakingly rebuilt and replanted hillside vineyards, championing low yields, quality-focused viticulture and meticulous winemaking. The estate’s holdings around Rosazzo, including the historic vineyards of the Abbazia di Rosazzo, are among the most prestigious in the Colli Orientali.
