Lillian Syrah Gold Series Nr. 3, 2013 is a rare, small-production California Syrah from Maggie Harrison, one of the most admired winemakers in the United States. As part of the Gold Series, this bottling is drawn from the most striking barrels, highlighting exceptional depth, texture, and aromatic intensity beyond the estate’s classic Syrah expression.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep, concentrated color that hints at its power and intensity. The nose is lifted and complex, with lavender, black pepper, dark berries, meaty notes, iron, and a subtle smoky edge. On the palate, it is richly layered and full-bodied, balancing ripe dark fruit with savory, mineral-driven nuances and a firm yet polished tannic structure. Despite its concentration, the wine feels silky and finely integrated, with the potential to age gracefully for many years as its aromatics and textures continue to unfold.

Production
The grapes come from highly regarded Santa Barbara County vineyards such as White Hawk, Bien Nacido, and Stolpman, where cool Pacific winds, morning fog, and warm afternoons create ideal conditions for Syrah with freshness, maturity, and structure. The soils vary from sand and limestone to rockier parcels, adding complexity and a distinct mineral backbone. Vinification follows Maggie Harrison’s minimal-intervention philosophy, with natural fermentation in small open-top fermenters and extended élevage in French oak barrels for up to 24 to 36 months. The wine is bottled without fining or filtration to preserve purity, texture, and intensity.

Food & Serving
This Syrah is an excellent match for grilled beef, lamb, game, spicy barbecue, and rich dishes with mushrooms or truffle. It also works beautifully with aged hard cheeses such as Comté or Manchego. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 1–2 hours, especially if drinking it young.

Inspired by a philosophy of tiny production, rigorous fruit selection, and minimal interference in the cellar, she has created one of California’s most respected Syrah-focused labels.
