Description
Liger-Belair’s Nuits-St-Georges Les Cras 1er Cru 2008 is a beautifully concentrated Pinot Noir from one of Burgundy’s most respected domaines. Sourced from very old vines on poor soils, it combines depth, precision, and unmistakable mineral character, showing why the estate has become such a benchmark in the region.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this wine shows a deeper color than many of its Vosne-Romanée siblings, with dark, inviting fruit at the core. The nose opens with black raspberry, elderberry, and subtle smoky notes, lifted by hints of crushed stone and a faint earthy, almost peat-like edge.
On the palate, it is vibrant and layered, with sappy fruit intensity, fine tannins, and a pronounced chalky, mineral line. Notes of raw meat, berry fruit, and mouth-watering salinity carry through to a long, palate-staining finish. This is a wine with excellent aging potential and should develop gracefully over 12–15 years or more.
Production
The Les Cras vineyard in Nuits-St-Georges is known for its poor soils and very old vines, some over 90 years old, which naturally limit yields and concentrate flavor. The estate follows biodynamic principles, including deep horse-plowing on its best parcels, and the fruit is carefully sorted to exclude compromised berries. In 2008, fermentation and élevage were handled with precision, with limited use of whole clusters to preserve purity and avoid any hint of greenness.
Food & Serving
This Pinot Noir pairs wonderfully with dishes that echo its savory depth and refined structure, such as roast duck, pigeon, lamb, venison, or mushroom-based cuisine. It also works beautifully with aged cheeses and dishes featuring earthy, truffle-like flavors. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decanting for about 1–2 hours is recommended if opening young, especially to help the wine fully unfold.
Producer
Domaine Du Comte Liger-Belair is one of Burgundy’s most admired estates, closely associated with meticulous vineyard work and an increasingly precise, elegant style. Under Louis-Michel Liger-Belair, the domaine has gained a strong reputation for its biodynamic approach and its outstanding holdings in top Burgundian vineyards. The 2008 vintage in particular was highly praised for its clarity, concentration, and sense of terroir expression.
