Description

L'IF 2016 in a rare 3L double magnum format is a refined expression of modern Saint-Émilion, crafted with the same meticulous care that made its sister estate Le Pin world‑famous. This vintage combines precision, finesse and depth, showcasing an elegantly perfumed profile wrapped in satin‑smooth structure. The large-format bottle offers exceptional aging potential, making it a standout choice for collectors and special occasions.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2016 L'IF shows a medium to deep garnet-purple hue, already hinting at both concentration and freshness. The nose begins discreetly, then slowly unfolds with layers of red and black plums, kirsch and wild berries, intertwined with rose petals, gentle tobacco nuances and a touch of wild sage and dried herbs. On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied with a strikingly refined texture: ripe, satin-like tannins glide across the tongue, framing pure, perfumed fruit. Notes of juicy plum, black cherry and redcurrant are lifted by a vibrant, mouthwatering freshness, leading into a long, aromatic finish with floral, herbal and subtly spicy echoes. In a 3L double magnum, this 2016 has superb aging potential: drinkable now with a proper decant, but likely to evolve beautifully for 15–25 years or longer, gaining further complexity and silkiness over time.

Production
L'IF is sourced from hillside parcels in Saint-Émilion, where clay-limestone and sandy clay soils give both power and finesse to predominantly Merlot with a complement of Cabernet Franc. The vines benefit from excellent drainage and exposure, helping achieve perfect ripeness while retaining freshness, a hallmark of the 2016 vintage in Bordeaux. Harvesting is typically done by hand, parcel by parcel, allowing strict selection of the healthiest, ripest bunches. In the cellar, vinification is carried out in small temperature-controlled vats to preserve aromatic purity and terroir expression, followed by aging in French oak barrels (a significant portion new) to add structure and complexity without overwhelming the wine’s floral and mineral character.

Food & Serving
The 2016 L'IF pairs beautifully with refined dishes that complement its elegance rather than overpower it. Think roast lamb with herbs, veal tenderloin, duck breast, pigeon, or a classic beef fillet with a red wine jus. It also works wonderfully with truffled poultry, mushroom-based dishes, and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or mature Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) for optimal balance and aromatic expression. Given the youth and structure of this vintage—especially in double magnum—decanting for 1.5–3 hours is recommended to allow the bouquet to fully blossom and the tannins to soften.

Producer
L'IF is a boutique Saint-Émilion estate owned and overseen by the Thienpont family, best known for the iconic Pomerol property Le Pin. Since taking over the vineyard, they have transformed it into one of the appellation’s most exciting rising stars, focusing on low yields, meticulous vineyard work and precise, terroir-driven winemaking. The name "L'IF" (French for "the yew tree") reflects both the estate’s sense of place and its discreet, thoughtful identity. Although relatively young in Bordeaux terms, L'IF has quickly earned a reputation for producing highly sought-after wines that marry the sensuality and polish associated with the Thienpont name with the limestone-driven finesse and energy of top Saint-Émilion terroir.
