Description

L'Esperance de Trotanoy 2014 is the refined second wine of the legendary Château Trotanoy in Pomerol, crafted to offer the estate’s signature depth and elegance in a more approachable style. This right-bank Bordeaux captures the character of a great terroir in a vintage known for its balance, freshness and classic structure. It’s a compelling choice for those who appreciate serious Pomerol but want something ready to drink and beautifully food-friendly.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, L'Esperance de Trotanoy 2014 shows a deep ruby colour with garnet reflections developing at the rim, reflecting a wine moving gracefully into its prime. The nose opens with ripe black cherries, plum compote and blackcurrant, layered with notes of violet, graphite, cedar, cocoa and a subtle touch of truffle and forest floor as it evolves in the glass. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, with a supple, velvety texture typical of top Pomerol Merlot, supported by fine-grained tannins and a fresh, well-defined acidity. Flavours of dark berries, red plum and black cherry are interwoven with hints of spice, tobacco, mocha and a savoury, earthy undertone. The finish is long, poised and mineral-tinged, showing both finesse and seriousness. The 2014 is drinking beautifully now, with enough structure to continue to develop complexity over the next 5–8 years, depending on storage conditions.

Production
Sourced from the exceptional clay and gravel soils of Pomerol on Bordeaux’s Right Bank, L'Esperance de Trotanoy is typically composed predominantly of Merlot with a small proportion of Cabernet Franc, mirroring the cépage of the grand vin. The vineyards benefit from well-draining gravel mixed with dense clay, which encourages deep root systems and naturally limited yields, contributing concentration and aromatic complexity. Grapes are harvested by hand, parcel by parcel, with strict sorting to ensure only perfectly ripe and healthy fruit is used. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats, allowing for gentle extraction of colour, tannin and flavour, followed by ageing in French oak barrels (a proportion of which are new) to refine the tannins and add subtle notes of spice and toast, while preserving the wine’s purity of fruit and Pomerol identity.

Food & Serving
L'Esperance de Trotanoy 2014 is an excellent partner for classic dishes such as roast lamb, grilled or pan-seared beef, veal chops and game birds like duck or guinea fowl. It also shines alongside earthy, mushroom-based dishes, truffle risotto, lentil stews, and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or Manchego. Serve at 16–18°C (around 60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and supple texture. For current drinking, decanting for 30–60 minutes helps the wine open up and soften the tannins; older bottles may need a more delicate, shorter decant mainly to separate any sediment.

Producer
L'Esperance de Trotanoy is the second wine of Château Trotanoy, one of Pomerol’s most esteemed and historic estates, owned and managed by the renowned J-P Moueix family. Trotanoy’s vineyards, planted primarily to Merlot with some Cabernet Franc, occupy some of the appellation’s finest clay and gravel parcels, long celebrated for producing wines of remarkable depth, structure and ageing potential. Created to showcase the estate’s style in a slightly more accessible form, L'Esperance benefits from the same meticulous vineyard care and winemaking philosophy as the grand vin. Château Trotanoy has played a key role in establishing Pomerol’s reputation as a source of some of Bordeaux’s most seductive and long-lived reds, and its second wine offers a more approachable window into this benchmark property.
