Description

L'Escadre Tradition from Château L'Escadre is a classic right-bank Bordeaux that over-delivers on charm and authenticity. Crafted from Merlot supported by Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, it offers a supple, fruit‑driven style with just the right touch of oak. Rooted in a family estate dating back to the 1800s, this is a wine that combines history, value and true Bordeaux character in the glass.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, L'Escadre Tradition shows a deep ruby colour with youthful violet reflections at the rim. The nose opens with ripe blackberries, plums and blackcurrants, layered with hints of dried herbs, cedar, and a delicate note of vanilla and sweet spice from oak aging. On the palate, the wine is medium to full‑bodied, smooth and rounded, with soft tannins that frame the dark fruit core. Flavours of juicy plum, black cherry and cassis are joined by subtle notes of tobacco leaf, toasted oak and a gentle earthy minerality, giving it a pleasing Bordeaux seriousness without being austere. The finish is balanced and persistent, with enough freshness to keep it lively at the table. Enjoyable now for its approachable, silky texture, it has the structure to age gracefully for another 5–7 years under good cellaring conditions.

Production
Château L'Escadre lies on the right bank of the Gironde, opposite the famed vineyards of Pauillac, on soils typical of this part of Bordeaux: clay and limestone with gravelly sections that are ideal for Merlot and the Cabernets. The estate vineyards are tended with a focus on ripeness and balance, with careful sorting at harvest to ensure only healthy, fully mature grapes make it to the cellar. Merlot forms the backbone of the blend, bringing plush fruit and roundness, while Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon contribute structure, aromatics and aging capacity. Vinification follows the traditional Bordeaux approach: temperature‑controlled fermentation in vats to preserve fruit purity, followed by maturation in oak barrels (a mix of new and used) to add complexity, gentle spice and a touch of toast without overpowering the wine’s natural freshness.

Food & Serving
This is a versatile Bordeaux red that shines alongside classic bistro and comfort dishes. It pairs beautifully with roast lamb, grilled or pan‑seared beef, duck breast, and slow‑cooked stews such as boeuf bourguignon. It also works well with hard cheeses like Comté, Gruyère or aged Gouda, and with rustic charcuterie boards. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its fruit and soften the tannins. A brief decant of 30–45 minutes will help the aromas open up, especially in its younger years.

Producer
Château L'Escadre is part of Vignobles Carreau, a family estate that has belonged to the Carreau family for seven generations, since 1832. The property, centred around an elegant 19th‑century château, is located in Cars on the right bank of the Gironde, facing the prestigious vineyards of Pauillac across the estuary. The name "L'Escadre" pays tribute to the family’s first owner, an admiral in the French navy, and reflects the estate’s long maritime and regional heritage. Over time, the Carreau family has acquired several neighbouring châteaux, each bringing its own terroir and strengths, allowing them to craft a range of supple, fruit‑forward Bordeaux wines with a subtle oak influence at very fair prices. Their wines are known locally and abroad for delivering authentic right‑bank character and dependable quality vintage after vintage.
