Description
Le C des Carmes Haut-Brion 2018 is the characterful second wine of the highly acclaimed Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion, crafted in the heart of Bordeaux’s Graves/Pessac-Léognan area. This 2018 vintage marries Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and a touch of Petit Verdot into a refined, modern claret that still speaks clearly of classic Bordeaux. With its vibrant energy, mineral backbone and graceful structure, it offers a compelling glimpse into the unique style of this increasingly sought‑after estate.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Le C des Carmes Haut-Brion shows a deep granat-lilac hue, almost opaque at the core with a youthful, glossy rim. The nose is initially a touch closed and slightly reductive, quickly unfurling into an aromatic tapestry of rose petals, cinnamon stick and freshly cracked black pepper layered over notes of Black Forest cake, licorice, tar, warm blackcurrant and a hint of smoky charcoal.
On the palate, this is medium-bodied but impressively concentrated, with a tightly woven core of ripe black fruits framed by firm, ripe and finely grained tannins. There is a lovely freshness that carries the flavors, giving lift to the darker, more savory nuances and highlighting subtle saline and mineral sparks that emerge on the long, lively finish. Still youthful and structured, this 2018 has the balance and tension to age very well over the next 10–15 years, gaining further complexity as the tannins resolve and the spice, floral and mineral notes knit together.
Production
Le C des Carmes Haut-Brion 2018 comes from vineyards on the gravelly, limestone and clay-rich soils that define the left bank terroir just outside the city of Bordeaux, in the historic Graves/Pessac-Léognan zone. The blend is composed of 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot, with 25% whole clusters included to bring additional aromatic lift and structure. Grapes are hand-harvested parcel by parcel, allowing optimal ripeness and careful selection at the winery. Vinification is tailored to preserve freshness and precision, with gentle extraction to respect the fruit and tannin quality. The wine is then aged 18–24 months in French oak barrels, around 30% of which are new, adding subtle spice, structure and complexity without overwhelming the purity of the fruit or the mineral drive of the terroir.
Food & Serving
This elegant yet structured Bordeaux red pairs beautifully with classic dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, grilled ribeye, duck breast with a red wine reduction or slow-braised beef. It also complements earthy flavors like mushroom ragout, truffled root vegetables and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or mature cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to show both its aromatic complexity and freshness. In its youth, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to allow the reduction to blow off and the floral, spicy and mineral notes to fully open; as it ages, a shorter decant will usually suffice to remove any sediment and gently awaken the wine.
Producer
Les Carmes Haut-Brion is one of Bordeaux’s most distinctive estates, located on the outskirts of the city in the historic cradle of Graves and Pessac-Léognan. Its roots trace back to the 16th century, when the land was owned by the Carmelites (hence the name ‘Carmes’), and over time it has become known for producing wines of finesse, aromatic complexity and remarkable freshness. In recent years, significant investment, visionary vineyard work and cutting-edge yet sensitive winemaking have propelled the château into the spotlight, with both the grand vin and the second wine, Le C des Carmes Haut-Brion, garnering strong critical praise. Today, the estate is celebrated for its unique urban terroir, innovative use of whole clusters and careful élevage, which together yield Bordeaux wines that are refined, characterful and highly expressive of their origin.
