Description
Les Carmes Haut‑Brion 2018 in magnum format is a thrilling, modern classic from one of Bordeaux’s most distinctive estates. Crafted from an unusually high proportion of Cabernet Franc and vinified with a large share of whole clusters, it marries energy, fragrance, and finesse with serious depth and aging power. Bottled in 1.5L, this magnum will evolve more slowly and gracefully, making it a superb choice for collectors and special occasions.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Les Carmes Haut‑Brion shows a deep, vibrant garnet‑purple hue, signaling both concentration and youth. The nose is initially reserved but quickly blossoms with an expressive mix of blackberry compote, blackcurrant jelly, mulberry, and Black Forest cake, layered over more savory nuances of pencil shavings, black truffle, graphite, charcoal, and a delicate violet lift.
On the palate, the wine is medium‑bodied yet intensely flavored, with a vivid interplay of red and black fruits that seem to dance across the tongue. Earthy and mineral sparks—crushed rock, warm iron, and a faint smokiness—add complexity and tension. The structure is defined by firm, grainy tannins, partly derived from the stems, giving a tactile, architectural frame to the fruit. Fresh acidity keeps everything precise and mouthwatering, leading to a long, savory, and finely etched finish. While already compelling, this 2018 is still integrating its stem‑borne tannins and oak; in magnum, it will benefit from at least 5–6 more years of cellaring and has the potential to evolve beautifully for 30 years or more.
Production
Les Carmes Haut‑Brion sits on the gravelly, clay‑rich soils of Pessac‑Léognan, just outside the city of Bordeaux—prime terroir combining deep gravels with cooler, moisture‑retentive subsoils that favor Cabernet varieties while preserving freshness. The 2018 blend is 37% Cabernet Franc, 34% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 29% Merlot, with an unusually high proportion of Cabernet Franc contributing perfume, spice, and finesse. Harvesting is carried out by hand, parcel by parcel, to ensure optimal ripeness and strict selection. Vinification is highly artisanal and innovative, with 52% whole‑cluster fermentation to bring aromatic lift, tension, and fine, stem‑derived tannins. The wine is then aged using a nuanced mix of vessels: 75% in new French oak barrels for structure and depth, 16% in large foudres to moderate oak imprint and preserve purity of fruit, and 9% in amphorae, which enhance texture and highlight the wine’s mineral and floral dimensions.
Food & Serving
This 2018 Les Carmes Haut‑Brion pairs beautifully with refined yet flavorful dishes: roast lamb with herbs, beef tenderloin with wild mushrooms, duck breast, or game birds such as pigeon or guinea fowl. Earthy accompaniments—truffle risotto, celeriac purée, grilled porcini, or root vegetable gratin—echo the wine’s mineral and savory notes, while hard or semi‑hard cheeses like Comté, aged Gouda, or Tomme de Savoie also make excellent partners. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to showcase both its aromatic complexity and structural finesse. In magnum, decanting is strongly recommended: about 2–3 hours for current drinking to allow the wine to open and soften, and 1–2 hours for bottles that have seen more extended cellaring.
Producer
Château Les Carmes Haut‑Brion traces its origins back to the 16th century, when the land was owned by the Carmelite monks—hence the name “Carmes.” Though neighboring the illustrious Haut‑Brion and La Mission Haut‑Brion in Pessac‑Léognan, it has quietly forged its own identity, especially over the last decade, as one of Bordeaux’s most original and exciting estates. Under recent stewardship and the direction of winemaker Guillaume Pouthier, Les Carmes Haut‑Brion has embraced a forward‑thinking yet terroir‑driven philosophy: meticulous vineyard work, substantial use of Cabernet Franc, whole‑cluster fermentations, and a thoughtful mix of barrels, foudres, and amphorae. These innovations, combined with its urban‑edge terroir, have elevated the estate to a cult status among Bordeaux enthusiasts, with recent vintages—including 2018—garnering significant critical acclaim for their elegance, precision, and age‑worthiness.
