Description
Château Léoville Poyferré 2015 is a polished Saint-Julien from one of the Left Bank’s most respected classified growth estates. Classified as a 2ème Grand Cru Classé in 1855, it combines the power and precision Bordeaux lovers seek with the refinement and structure that have made the property a benchmark in the appellation.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2015 vintage typically shows a deep ruby-purple colour, hinting at concentration and ripeness. The nose is expressive and layered, with dark cassis, black cherry, plum, cedar, graphite, violet, and subtle spice, often joined by notes of tobacco and a touch of cocoa from élevage in oak.
On the palate it is usually full-bodied, structured, and beautifully balanced, with ripe dark fruit, fine tannins, fresh acidity, and the classic Saint-Julien sense of poise. The finish is long and savoury, with mineral and cedar nuances. Built for cellaring, this is a wine that can develop gracefully for well over a decade, and likely much longer from a strong vintage like 2015.
Production
Leoville Poyferré comes from Saint-Julien on Bordeaux’s Left Bank, where gravelly soils, good drainage, and the tempering influence of the Gironde help produce wines with depth, freshness, and firm structure. While the grape blend is not specified here, the estate is traditionally rooted in the classic Bordeaux varieties of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc. Harvest is typically carried out parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness, followed by careful vinification to preserve purity of fruit and terroir expression, with aging in French oak adding complexity and polish.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with roast lamb, beef tenderloin, duck breast, game, and slow-cooked dishes with earthy elements such as mushrooms or truffle. It also works well with aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for at least 1–2 hours if opening young, as this will help the wine open up and show its full aromatic range.
Producer
Château Léoville Poyferré is one of the historic estates of Saint-Julien, tracing its roots back to the grand Léoville property that once ranked among the largest and most important in Bordeaux. Today it is widely recognised for producing elegant yet powerful wines that showcase the depth and consistency of the appellation. Over the years, the château has earned an excellent reputation among collectors and critics alike, with the 2015 vintage standing as a strong example of its quality and pedigree.
