Description
Presented here in an impressive 6L Imperial, Léoville Poyferré 2018 is a grand, cellar‑worthy expression of Saint-Julien, crafted for both immediate pleasure and long-term evolution. This Second Growth (Deuxième Cru Classé) Bordeaux marries power with polish, showcasing the estate’s signature opulence and precision in a format designed for celebrations and extended aging. The 2018 vintage stands out as one of the château’s modern greats, reflecting both the excellence of the year and Léoville Poyferré’s continued rise among the Médoc elite.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Léoville Poyferré shows a deep, opaque garnet-purple color, hinting at its concentration and youth. The nose is exuberant and layered, with a cascade of ripe black fruits—morello cherries, plum compote, and blackberry tart—woven together with notes of cedar chest, unsmoked cigars, vanilla pod, sassafras, and a subtle mineral edge reminiscent of crushed stones.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, rich, and sensuous, delivering hedonistic dark fruit flavors framed by velvety, finely grained tannins. Spicy accents, a touch of exotic sweetness from the oak, and a core of vibrant freshness keep it impeccably balanced despite its power. The finish is long, savory, and satisfying, with lingering notes of black fruit, spice, and cedar. While already remarkably enjoyable in its youth, especially in this generous format, the 2018 has the structure and acidity to age gracefully for 30 years or more, with the 6L Imperial promising an even slower, more refined evolution.
Production
The 2018 Léoville Poyferré is rooted in the gravelly, well-drained soils of Saint-Julien in the Médoc, a terroir famed for producing Cabernet Sauvignon of depth and finesse. The blend is 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot, and 3% Cabernet Franc, each variety contributing to complexity and balance. Grapes are meticulously harvested parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness, then carefully sorted to ensure only the healthiest berries make it into the cuvée. Vinification typically takes place in temperature-controlled vats, allowing for precise extraction of color, aromatics, and tannin. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels, 80% of which are new, lending refined spice, cedar, and vanilla notes while preserving the purity of the fruit and the character of the terroir.
Food & Serving
This powerful yet polished Saint-Julien pairs beautifully with richly flavored dishes such as roast lamb with garlic and herbs, beef ribeye or côte de boeuf, venison, or slow-braised short ribs. It also complements classic French cuisine—duck breast, truffle dishes, and earthy mushroom preparations—as well as aged hard cheeses like Comté or mature cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and balance. Decanting for 2–3 hours in its youth is strongly recommended to allow the wine to open fully; even at maturity, a gentle decant will help it express its most nuanced layers, especially from this large-format Imperial.
Producer
Château Léoville Poyferré is one of the historic Second Growth estates of Saint-Julien, classified in the landmark 1855 Médoc classification. Once part of the larger Léoville estate, it emerged as its own property in the 19th century and has since become renowned for producing some of the appellation’s most seductive yet age-worthy wines. Under modern stewardship, particularly from the late 20th century onward, Léoville Poyferré has undergone significant investment and qualitative improvement, placing it firmly among the top names on the Left Bank. Its wines are prized for combining the classic structure of great Médoc Cabernet with a luxurious texture and depth that have earned consistently high critical acclaim and a loyal global following.
