Description
Château Léoville Las Cases is one of the most sought-after names in Saint-Julien, consistently admired for its precision, depth, and remarkable aging potential. Classified as a Second Growth in 1855, it is often regarded as one of the most “First Growth-like” estates in Bordeaux, producing wines of serious structure and refinement.
Tasting Notes
The 2023 vintage is expected to show a deep, concentrated color with the classic Left Bank profile of dark berries, cassis, graphite, cedar, and finely integrated oak. On the palate, Léoville Las Cases is typically powerful yet controlled, with firm tannins, bright freshness, and a long, savory finish that reflects both the Cabernet Sauvignon dominance of the estate and the cool, gravelly character of Saint-Julien.
This is a wine built for the cellar rather than immediate gratification. While approachable after careful decanting in its youth, it will reward patience over many years, developing complex notes of tobacco, leather, cigar box, and forest floor with age.
Production
Léoville Las Cases sits on exceptional gravelly terroir at the northern edge of Saint-Julien, bordering Pauillac, with soils that favor Cabernet Sauvignon and encourage depth, precision, and tannic structure. The estate is known for meticulous vineyard work and selective harvesting, followed by a traditional vinification approach aimed at preserving purity, balance, and the distinctive character of each parcel.
Food & Serving
Best served at 16–18°C and ideally decanted for 1–2 hours if enjoyed young. This is an excellent partner for roast beef, lamb, duck, game, or richly flavored mushroom dishes, as well as aged cheeses.
Producer
Château Léoville Las Cases is one of Bordeaux’s most respected historic estates, with roots dating back to the 17th century and a long-standing reputation for producing wines of exceptional class and longevity. Located in Saint-Julien, it has earned global recognition for its consistent quality and for crafting wines that combine power, elegance, and remarkable cellar potential.
