Description
Château Léoville Las Cases is one of Saint-Julien’s most iconic names, producing a Bordeaux blend that is prized for its precision, depth and remarkable longevity. Classified as a Second Growth in 1855, it has long been admired for wines of aristocratic structure, understated power and classic Left Bank character.
Tasting Notes
The 2023 vintage is expected to show a deep ruby colour with a polished, youthful intensity. Aromatically, Léoville Las Cases typically offers cassis, black cherry, graphite, cedar, violets and subtle tobacco, with the more structured elements of the blend bringing added complexity and lift.
On the palate, the wine is usually concentrated and layered, with firm yet refined tannins, vibrant acidity and a long, mineral finish. Even in a generous vintage, this is a wine built for patience rather than immediate gratification, with the potential to evolve beautifully over decades.
Production
Léoville Las Cases is sourced from exceptional gravelly and deep clay soils at the northern edge of Saint-Julien, close to the Pauillac border, where the terroir helps shape the estate’s powerful, structured style. The estate is known for meticulous vineyard work and careful hand harvesting, followed by parcel-by-parcel vinification to preserve precision and terroir expression. The final blend is typically dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot and small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, depending on the vintage.
Food & Serving
Best served with classic refined dishes such as beef fillet, rack of lamb, duck breast, or game with rich sauces. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for several hours if enjoying it young, as this will help open the wine’s layered aromatics and soften the tannins.
Producer
Château Léoville Las Cases has a long and celebrated history in Bordeaux, originally part of the vast Léoville estate before being divided into three châteaux. Today it is regarded as one of the most serious and consistent estates in Saint-Julien, often mentioned among the finest producers on the Left Bank. Its reputation rests on exceptional vineyard holdings, disciplined winemaking and a style that combines grandeur, restraint and extraordinary aging capacity.
