Description

Léonce Bocquet Mercurey 2019 is a characterful Burgundy red that brings together ripe fruit, subtle spice, and the elegant structure that makes Mercurey such a respected name in the Côte Chalonnaise. Named after one of Burgundy’s most influential wine merchants, it carries a sense of heritage as well as classic regional style.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this wine shows a deep ruby colour with appealing brightness. The nose opens with dark cherry, strawberry, and woodland berry notes, followed by layers of cinnamon, spice, and a gentle touch of vanilla. On the palate, those red and dark fruit flavours are echoed with good freshness and a refined, savoury edge. The spice notes add warmth and complexity, while the overall balance suggests a wine that can be enjoyed now but will also develop gracefully over the next few years.

Production
Produced in Mercurey, in Burgundy’s Côte Chalonnaise, this wine reflects the clay-limestone soils and cool climate that help preserve freshness and aromatic detail. The wine is made to highlight the purity of fruit and the natural structure of the appellation, with vinification aimed at bringing out both finesse and depth.

Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for roast chicken, duck, grilled salmon, mushroom dishes, and classic Burgundian fare such as coq au vin. Serve slightly cool at around 15–16°C, and consider decanting briefly if opened young to allow the aromas to open fully.

Producer
Léonce Bocquet was a 19th-century wine merchant and an important figure in Burgundy’s wine trade. He is remembered for saving Château du Clos de Vougeot in 1889 and for helping restore it through a major personal investment, while also playing a key role in bringing high-quality Burgundy wines to markets across Europe. His legacy lives on in the region’s history and reputation for excellence.
