Description

Le Mortelle Poggio alle Nane 2022 is a refined Tuscan red that showcases the elegance and depth Bordeaux varieties can achieve on the Maremma coast. Crafted from Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Carménère, it combines coastal freshness with impressive concentration and structure. As part of the Antinori family’s ambitious Le Mortelle project, Poggio alle Nane has quickly become one of the estate’s flagship wines, highlighting a more contemporary, terroir-driven face of Tuscany.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Poggio alle Nane 2022 shows a deep, vibrant ruby color with purple highlights, hinting at both youth and intensity. The nose is layered and expressive, with ripe blackcurrant, blackberry, and dark cherry interwoven with graphite, tobacco leaf, and fresh herbs. Subtle notes of black pepper, cocoa, and sweet spices from well-judged oak add complexity without overwhelming the fruit. On the palate, this is a structured yet polished wine: dense, ripe fruit at the core supported by fine-grained tannins and a lively coastal acidity that keeps everything in balance. Flavors of cassis, wild berries, plum, and dark chocolate unfold alongside hints of cedar, bay leaf, and a touch of Mediterranean garrigue. The finish is long and savory, with lingering spice and mineral notes. Enjoyable in its youth with some aeration, it has the backbone to evolve gracefully over the next 8–12 years, gaining more tertiary nuances of leather, truffle, and cigar box with time in bottle.

Production
Poggio alle Nane comes from Le Mortelle’s estate vineyards near Castiglione della Pescaia in southern Tuscany, where gently rolling hills face the Tyrrhenian Sea. The terroir combines well-drained sandy and clay-limestone soils, abundant sunshine, and cooling sea breezes, ideal for slow, even ripening of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Carménère. Grapes are typically harvested by hand, parcel by parcel, to ensure optimal maturity and rigorous selection in both vineyard and cellar. After careful destemming and fermentation in temperature-controlled tanks, each variety is vinified separately to preserve its character, with maceration tailored to extract fine tannins and pure fruit. The wine is then aged in French oak barriques (a portion new), allowing the components to harmonize and develop complexity before final blending and a further period of bottle aging prior to release.

Food & Serving
Le Mortelle Poggio alle Nane 2022 is a natural match for richly flavored dishes such as grilled or roasted beef, lamb chops with rosemary, venison, or slow-braised short ribs. It also pairs beautifully with aged Tuscan pecorino, truffle dishes, game birds, and hearty pasta or risotto with wild mushrooms or ragù. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Bordeaux-style glasses to highlight its aromatic complexity. Decanting for 1–2 hours before serving is recommended in the wine’s youth to open up the bouquet and soften the tannins.

Producer
Le Mortelle is a coastal estate in Maremma owned by Marchesi Antinori, one of Italy’s most historic and influential wine families, whose roots in winemaking date back to 1385. Created as a modern, forward-looking project, Le Mortelle focuses on expressing the unique maritime terroir of southern Tuscany through both local and international varieties. The estate’s investment in precision viticulture, sustainable practices, and a gravity-fed winery has quickly elevated it to a reference point for high-quality wines from the region. Poggio alle Nane stands among its top cuvées, reflecting Antinori’s long-standing commitment to innovation and quality that has helped redefine Tuscany on the world wine stage.
