Description

Le Macioche Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2019 is a refined and deeply expressive Sangiovese from one of Montalcino’s quietly brilliant small estates. Crafted only in the best vintages and from the estate’s finest parcels, this Riserva captures the classic soul of Brunello with a modern sense of precision and purity. It’s a wine for collectors and Brunello lovers who appreciate both elegance and depth.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Riserva shows a luminous, deep garnet core with brick-red reflections toward the rim, hinting at both concentration and emerging complexity. The nose opens with dark cherry and black plum, followed by layers of dried rose petals, blood orange zest, sweet tobacco, and subtle spice notes of clove, star anise, and cedar. As it evolves in the glass, you may pick up nuances of forest floor, leather, and a delicate hint of balsamic. On the palate, this Brunello Riserva is focused and poised, with a core of ripe red and black cherry, wild berries, and a savory Sangiovese tang. Fine-grained tannins are firm yet polished, framing flavors of dried herbs, licorice, cocoa nib, and a mineral edge that reflects its hillside origin. The acidity is vibrant and mouthwatering, lending lift and length to a long, layered finish. While already seductive in its youth, the structure and balance suggest a strong aging potential of 10–20 years from vintage in a good cellar, during which it will gain further tertiary notes of truffle, leather, and spice.

Production
Le Macioche is a small, high-altitude estate just outside the town of Montalcino, where Sangiovese thrives on rocky, well-drained soils of galestro and limestone, cooled by hillside breezes and significant diurnal temperature swings. The vineyards are farmed organically, with meticulous hand work in the rows to ensure low yields and healthy, perfectly ripe grapes. Harvest is carried out entirely by hand, parcel by parcel, allowing only the most pristine Sangiovese clusters to be selected for the Brunello Riserva. In the cellar, fermentation typically takes place in temperature-controlled tanks with gentle extraction to preserve purity of fruit and fine tannin texture. The wine then ages for an extended period in large traditional oak casks (and, in some vintages, a touch of neutral French oak), followed by significant bottle aging before release, in line with and often exceeding Brunello di Montalcino Riserva regulations.

Food & Serving
This Riserva calls for refined yet flavorful dishes: think slow-braised beef or veal, Tuscan-style roast lamb with rosemary, wild boar ragù over pappardelle, or aged Pecorino Toscano and Parmigiano Reggiano. It also shines alongside truffle dishes, porcini risotto, or grilled game birds. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Decanting is recommended for 1–2 hours in its youth to let the aromatics fully unfold and soften the tannins; older bottles may benefit from a gentle, shorter decant to remove sediment while preserving delicate tertiary notes.

Producer
Le Macioche is a boutique estate in Montalcino, long admired by insiders for its artisanal approach and its vineyards perched at higher elevations near the historic hilltop town. With just a handful of hectares under vine, the focus has always been on pure Sangiovese, organic farming, and traditional Brunello craftsmanship. In recent years, the estate has seen renewed investment and careful modernization in the cellar, all while preserving its classic stylistic identity. Today, Le Macioche is regarded as an important small player in Montalcino, producing characterful, terroir-driven Brunelli that consistently earn critical attention and offer a more intimate, site-focused expression of this world-famous Tuscan appellation.
