Description

Larmandier-Bernier Champagne 1er Cru Rosé de Saignée Extra Brut is a serious rosé Champagne for those who want something beyond simple pink bubbles. Crafted by one of Champagne’s benchmark grower-producers, this cuvée is widely considered among the finest rosé Champagnes in the world. Made by the traditional saignée method from predominantly Pinot Noir (with a touch of Pinot Gris), it delivers depth, structure and authenticity that set it apart from most blended rosés.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Rosé de Saignée shows a vivid, shimmering salmon-pink to light ruby hue, with a fine, persistent mousse and an elegant bead. The nose opens with wild strawberries, raspberries and redcurrants, followed by blood orange zest, pomegranate, rose petals and a distinct chalky minerality, all underpinned by subtle notes of brioche and spice. On the palate, it is dry, precise and intensely flavoured, with the Extra Brut dosage keeping everything taut and vibrant. Juicy red berry fruit and citrus are framed by a firm, chalk-driven structure and a gentle phenolic grip from the maceration, giving the wine a gastronomic, almost red-wine-like presence. The finish is long, saline and refreshingly crisp, with lingering notes of crushed berries and citrus peel. While utterly compelling now, this non-vintage rosé has the concentration and structure to evolve beautifully for 5–8 years from release, gaining complexity and a more savoury, vinous character over time.

Production
Sourced from 1er Cru vineyards in the southern Côte des Blancs around Vertus and neighbouring villages, this Champagne reflects a terroir of chalk and limestone-rich soils that naturally yield tense, mineral-driven wines. Larmandier-Bernier farms their vines organically and biodynamically, favouring low yields, careful canopy management and hand harvesting at optimal ripeness to ensure healthy, concentrated grapes. The Rosé de Saignée is made by direct maceration: Pinot Noir (and a small proportion of Pinot Gris) is allowed to soak briefly on the skins to draw out colour, aroma and fine tannins before gentle pressing. Fermentation is carried out with indigenous yeasts, largely in neutral barrels or large oak, followed by an extended period on the lees to build texture and complexity. The wine is bottled for secondary fermentation and aged a further long stretch on its lees in bottle, then disgorged with a very low Extra Brut dosage to preserve purity, terroir expression and tension.

Food & Serving
This is a serious food Champagne that shines at the table. Its structure and depth make it superb with tuna or salmon (tartar, grilled or mi-cuit), charcuterie, roast poultry, duck breast, veal, or dishes featuring beetroot, mushrooms and root vegetables. It pairs beautifully with sushi, refined Asian cuisine, and aged hard cheeses as well. Serve chilled at around 8–10°C (46–50°F); if you have a younger bottle, pouring it into a large white-wine glass or giving it a brief 10–15 minute rest in the glass will help it open up its full aromatic range.

Producer
Larmandier-Bernier is a revered grower Champagne estate based in Vertus, in the Côte des Blancs, and is often cited among the region’s most important artisan producers. Family-run and deeply rooted in Champagne’s history, the domaine has been cultivating its own vines for generations, and was an early pioneer of organic and biodynamic viticulture in a region dominated by larger houses. Their focus on low yields, meticulous vineyard work and minimal-intervention winemaking has made them a reference point for terroir-driven Champagne. Consistently praised by leading critics and sommeliers worldwide, Larmandier-Bernier’s wines—particularly their single-terroir bottlings and this Rosé de Saignée—are considered benchmarks for purity, precision and authenticity in the Champagne region.
