Description
Lafite Rothschild 2018 in magnum format is a benchmark Pauillac and one of the most coveted wines of Bordeaux. This 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8.5% Merlot and 0.5% Petit Verdot blend captures the precision, finesse and quiet power that define Lafite at its best. Presented in 1.5L, this magnum offers slower, more graceful aging and an especially majestic drinking experience for the cellar or a great table. The 2018 vintage at Lafite Rothschild is widely recognized for its purity of fruit, classical structure and remarkable length, standing out even among the château’s long line of legendary years. This is a wine that combines mineral depth and aristocratic tannins with an almost effortless elegance—an expression that will reward patience over decades.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Lafite Rothschild 2018 shows a deep purple-black core with a vibrant, inky rim, signaling both youth and concentration. After a good swirl, the wine gradually unfurls its bouquet: vivid cassis and blackcurrant juice, baked plums and black cherry compote, layered with dark chocolate, licorice, warm cedarwood, pencil shavings, a hint of cast-iron pan and a subtle earthiness reminiscent of fertile clay soil.
On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied but intensely focused, with a refined, almost weightless texture that is unmistakably Lafite. Layers of mineral-laced black fruit glide across the tongue, wrapped in extraordinarily fine, ripe tannins that feel silky yet firm. The structure is precise and linear, with perfectly judged acidity and an “epic” finish that lingers on notes of graphite, cedar and dark berries. At 13.3% alcohol, it remains beautifully balanced and classical in profile. This 2018 magnum will benefit from at least 7–8 years of cellaring before approaching, and in this larger format it has the potential to evolve gracefully for 40+ years.
Production
Château Lafite Rothschild sits on some of the greatest terroir in Pauillac, on the northern end of the Médoc, with deep gravel soils over limestone and clay that are perfectly suited to Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2018 blend—91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8.5% Merlot, 0.5% Petit Verdot—is sourced from the estate’s historic parcels, many of them old vines rooted in poor, well-drained gravel that naturally limits yields and concentrates flavor. Harvesting is carried out by hand, parcel by parcel, to ensure optimal ripeness and meticulous selection at the sorting tables. In the cellar, Lafite follows a rigorously traditional yet precise vinification: fermentation in temperature-controlled vats, followed by élevage in high-quality French oak barriques (a high proportion new), allowing the wine to develop its signature harmony, texture and aromatic complexity without ever overpowering the fruit.
Food & Serving
Lafite Rothschild 2018 is a classic partner for refined, protein-rich dishes that complement its structure and noble tannins: think roasted lamb with herbs, dry-aged ribeye, venison, or beef Wellington. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, truffled roast chicken, or mature, firm cheeses such as Comté, aged Gouda or well-aged hard goat’s cheese. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to preserve freshness and aromatic detail. In its youth, this magnum will benefit from 2–3 hours in a decanter to open up; as it matures and develops tertiary notes, a gentler, shorter decant to remove sediment will be sufficient.
Producer
Château Lafite Rothschild is one of Bordeaux’s most illustrious estates and a First Growth under the original 1855 Classification, long considered a reference point for Pauillac and for Cabernet Sauvignon-based blends worldwide. The property’s viticultural history dates back to at least the 17th century, but it rose to fame in the 18th century at the courts of France and England and later under the stewardship of the Rothschild family from 1868 onward. Known for producing wines of remarkable finesse, longevity and distinctive graphite-cedar aromatics, Lafite has become synonymous with classical elegance in Bordeaux. The estate’s unwavering pursuit of quality, combined with its exceptional terroir and meticulous vineyard and cellar work, has yielded many of the region’s most collectible and long-lived wines, with vintages like 2018 standing firmly in that lineage.
