Description
Lafite Rothschild 2010 is a benchmark Pauillac from one of Bordeaux’s most revered First Growth estates, crafted in a truly great vintage. Intensely structured yet supremely refined, it represents the classic Lafite style: powerful, precise and built for the long haul. This is a collector’s wine of real pedigree, uniting centuries of heritage with the precision of modern winemaking.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2010 Lafite Rothschild shows a deep, concentrated garnet-red core with only the faintest hint of maturity at the rim, reflecting its youth and immense aging potential. The nose is initially reserved but blossoms with air, revealing warm blackcurrants, baked plums and boysenberry layered with notes of chocolate mint, violets, cedar chest and that signature graphite/pencil-shaving nuance.
The palate is full-bodied and impeccably composed, with dense, perfumed black fruit wrapped around a rock-solid spine of ripe, fine-grained tannins. There is great richness and concentration, yet the wine remains poised and fresh, with vibrant acidity carrying the flavors through a very long, mineral-driven finish. Still remarkably youthful, this 2010 will continue to evolve beautifully for decades, making it an outstanding candidate for long-term cellaring.
Production
Château Lafite Rothschild lies on some of the most privileged terroir in Pauillac, on deep gravel soils over limestone that naturally limit yields and promote exceptional drainage—ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon. The vineyard is planted mainly to Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot contributing complexity. Grapes are hand-harvested in small parcels at optimal ripeness, then carefully sorted before fermentation. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled vats, followed by extended aging in a high proportion of new French oak barrels, where the wine gains its remarkable finesse, structure and subtle integration of oak. The 2010 vintage, with its combination of ripe fruit, excellent balance and classic tannic backbone, is one of the great modern years for Lafite.
Food & Serving
Lafite Rothschild 2010 deserves equally refined cuisine: think roast lamb with herbs, dry-aged ribeye or côte de boeuf, braised veal, or game birds like pigeon or duck. It also pairs beautifully with earthy dishes such as truffle-infused sauces, wild mushrooms, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at around 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatics and structure. Decanting for 2–3 hours is strongly recommended at this stage to allow the wine to open up and reveal its full complexity.
Producer
Château Lafite Rothschild is one of the most iconic names in fine wine, officially recognized as a Premier Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. With a documented history dating back to at least the 17th century, Lafite has long been regarded as a reference point for elegance and longevity in Pauillac and the Médoc. Under the stewardship of the Rothschild family since the 19th century, the estate has combined meticulous vineyard management with exacting cellar work to produce some of the world’s most sought-after wines. Lafite’s enduring reputation and consistent excellence place it at the very pinnacle of Bordeaux, and vintages like 2010 are considered modern legends in its storied lineage.
