Description

Château Lafite Rothschild is one of the most celebrated names in Bordeaux, and the 2003 vintage in double magnum offers a rare chance to experience this First Growth on a grand scale. A heatwave year gave the wine a riper, more opulent profile than usual, while still retaining Lafite’s trademark refinement, depth, and aristocratic composure.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a dense, dark ruby-purple colour that hints at its concentration. The nose is layered and expressive, with graphite, crème de cassis, smoke, floral notes, and a touch of melted licorice, all wrapped in a polished, ripe style. On the palate, it is rich, powerful, and supple, with impressive intensity, purity, and a velvety texture. The tannins are abundant and finely grained, suggesting long cellaring potential, and in a double magnum format the wine should evolve beautifully for decades, with an anticipated drinking window stretching from around 2010 well into the 2050s.

Production
The grapes for Château Lafite Rothschild come from the gravelly, well-drained terroirs of Pauillac in the Médoc, where old vines are carefully tended and yields are kept deliberately low. Harvesting is done by hand, and the estate relies on traditional, meticulous vineyard work with minimal chemical intervention. For the Grand Vin, the 2003 blend is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot completing the cuvée; in this hot vintage, production was significantly below normal, adding to the wine’s rarity and concentration.

Food & Serving
This is a wine for refined, richly flavoured dishes such as roast lamb, beef fillet, venison, duck breast, or truffle-based preparations. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for a few hours if drinking young, especially in a large-format bottle, to allow the aromas and tannins to open fully.

Producer
Founded centuries ago and elevated to Premier Cru status in the 1855 classification, Château Lafite Rothschild has long been regarded as one of the great reference points of Bordeaux. Under the Rothschild family, the estate has maintained its reputation for precision, elegance, and longevity, and it remains one of the most sought-after producers in the world, with 2003 standing out as one of the modern vintages destined to show its grandeur over time.
